LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — In response to potential drug use by students and increase in community overdoses, Loudoun County Public Schools said high schools will get unannounced checks by canine teams.

LCPS is working with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and Leesburg Police Department to have canine teams conduct scans in high school buildings. The scans beginning in March will occur randomly without notice at high schools throughout the spring. Families will be notified after a scan happens.

"Working closely with law enforcement and leveraging this added layer of prevention helps to keep our spaces safe," said Superintendent Aaron Spence in a statement. "By teaming up, we're making sure our schools stay focused on creating a positive environment for every student. Together, we can ensure that our educational spaces remain sanctuaries for growth where our students and staff feel protected."

During this school year, the sheriff's office had investigated eight fentanyl overdoses among Park View High School students. Four of the overdoses happened on the school campus. In January, the sheriff's office said two people in the county died of suspected opioid overdoses.

"The LCSO is working aggressively with LCPS to keep dangerous substances out of our schools and communities," said Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman in a statement. "More student and community awareness of the danger, coupled with greater deterrence, are key to our long-term success and I am hopeful that the use of canine scans will help."

LCPS policy prohibits drug possession, use and distribution in schools. The school division said students and families struggling with substance abuse can receive support.
