Thanksgiving Morning: 2014 Alexandria Turkey Trot

The 39th annual five-mile foot race is set for Thanksgiving morning starting at GW Middle School in Alexandria.

Alexandria’s annual Turkey Trot is set for Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27 with a race start time of 9 a.m. Last year’s race, which takes place in the Del Ray and Rosemont neighborhoods, saw more than 4,200 runners and frigid temperatures. The main sponsors of the race are the DC Road Runners and the Del Ray Business Association.

You can register now or up until 8:30 a.m. the day of the race.

  • Age 12 or younger: $5 (or $10 in person, day of the race)
  • Age 13 to 21: $15/$20
  • Age 22 and older: $20/$25

Payment on the day of the race is by cash or check only.

T-SHIRT: Optional, $10. Order online to be sure your size is available. A limited number will be available for purchase on race day, but we usually sell out by 9:30 a.m.

PACKET PICKUP: You can pick up your packet at George Washington Middle School from 6-8 p.m. the day before the race; or the day of the race, starting at 7:30 a.m. at George Washington Middle School.

COURSE: Flat, fast, USATF-certified five-mile course, starts and ends at George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Ave.

Schedule of Events

Wednesday, Nov. 26:

  • 6-8 p.m., Packet Pickup at George Washington Middle School

Thursday November 27:

  • 7:30 a.m.: Doors at GW Middle School open for registration and Packet Pickup.
  • 8:45 a.m.: Invocation and announcements
  • 9 a.m.: Race start
  • 10 a.m.: Main awards ceremony begins.

FOOD DONATION: Support ALIVE!, a nonprofit organization serving Alexandria’s needy, by bringing two nonperishable food items (cans, boxes) on race day. You may also make an optional cash donation when you register.

MINORS: Must have parent or guardian present to register and participate.

TIMING: The Alexandria Turkey Trot will be chip timed using a Chronotrack timing system. Timing chips will be attached to the back of your bib; please wear the bibs on the front, outermost layer of clothing for an accurate time.

AWARDS: $2,000 split between 1st, 2nd, 3rd place overall M+F, plus 1st place M+F masters.

  • Other valuable prizes to 1st, 2nd, 3rd place age group winners.
  • $100 bonus for new course record!
  • Award winners are determined from GUN TIME only. If you plan on being competitive, you should make your way to the front of the pack for the start.

DIRECTIONS:

Metro: Take the blue or yellow line to Braddock Road, walk west a along Braddock Road (under the metro tracks) you will see GW Middle School on the right after the underpass.

From DC: Take the 14th street bridge to VA, exit onto route 1 and drive 2.7 miles to raymond road (just past Target), make a right onto Raymond road, and a left on to Mt. Vernon ave, proceed one mile on Mt. Vernon, GW Middle School will be on your left.

From Springfield: Take Route 1 into Alexandria and make a left on Whythe St., continue onto Braddock road (passing under the metro tracks), make a right onto Mt. Vernon Ave, GW Middle School will be immediately on your right.
