The stabbing occurred around 8 a.m. on Tuesday in the Shelton Knolls neighborhood, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said. Investigators said Washington was upset about a family matter and started making threats.

An argument broke out with another family member and evolved into a fight, according to authorities. During the fight, the victim tried to intervene. Washington then stabbed the victim in the back of the neck, police said.

The victim and the family member took the knife away from Washington and restrained him until help arrived.
