Del. Scott Surovell Hosts Fifth Annual Amundson Institute

Provides first-hand legislative experience to students interested in public service.

Del. Scott Surovell (D-44th) hosted the Fifth Annual Amundson Institute this past Sunday, Feb. 1 through Monday, Feb. 2. Originally created by his predecessor, former Del. Kris Amundson, the program provides an opportunity for students in Mt. Vernon-Lee who demonstrate high potential in leadership to gain first-hand experience with state government.

The group was composed of West Potomac and Mount Vernon High School Juniors and Seniors and chaperoned by WPHS Government teacher Nicole Borghard. They had an average G.P.A. of 3.97 and consisted of student government leaders, members of the National Honor Society and represented seven different high school athletic teams. Names are below:

  • Jayne Orleans, WPHS Class of 2015
  • Kelly O’Meara, WPHS Class of 2015
  • Margaret O’Meara, WPHS Class of 2015
  • Catherine Ming, MVHS Class of 2015
  • Taamson Joshua, WPHS Class of 2016
  • Emma Kelly, WPHS Class of 2016

The group met with former Delegates Kris Amundson and Chris Saxman, Senator Adam Ebbin, Secretary of Education Ann Holton and Governor Terry McAuliffe while in Richmond in addition to attending committee hearings and the House of Delegates floor session.
