MD Man Dies After Head-On Crash Into Barrier In Springfield: Police

A Maryland man who police suspect was speeding died after he crashed his SUV into a jersey barrier in Springfield early Sunday morning.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A Maryland man who police suspect was speeding was killed when he crashed his SUV into a jersey barrier in Springfield early Sunday morning.

At about 1:20 a.m. on Sunday, Fairfax County police officers responded to Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road for a report of a 2019 Nissan Rogue that had crashed into the jersey barrier.

The driver, Issac Garcia Mendoza, 21, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Witnesses told detectives they saw Mendoza driving northbound on Backlick Road at a high rate of speed. Mendoza failed to turn onto Old Keene Mill Road and struck the concrete barrier head-on, police said.

While they believe speed was a factor in the fatal crash, police are continuing to investigate whether alcohol or narcotics were also factors in the crash.
