LEESBURG, VA — Several restaurants around the Leesburg area were cited with violations by the Loudoun County Health Department during inspections between Jan. 12 and Jan. 18.

As coronavirus restrictions continue to fluctuate around the state, health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

  • Giovanni’s NY Pizza, 520 East Market Street Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Jan. 12
    • Total violations: 10
      • There is no handwash lavatory at the pizza prep area, preventing routine handwashing by food workers. This handsink has been turned off due to a leak.
      • The handsink at the dishwasher area does not have hot running water. 52F observed. As per PIC (person In Charge), this was plumbed for cold only incorrectly.
      • No paper towels at dishwasher area handsink for drying hands after handwashing.
      • Raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in the refrigeration unit. Raw shell egg is stored over cabbage and cooked foods.
      • Facility is washing and rinsing pans and equipment without following with the 3rd step of sanitizing cleaned items.
      • Cooked chicken from yesterday was placed into cooler without properly cooling.
      • Items in the top left of pizza prep cooler are not cold holding at proper temperatures.
      • Date labeling of cooked and ready to eat foods is not in practice in this facility. Creat a date labeling system to date mark ready-to-eat cooked foods. Items not date labeled include cooked chicken& cooked beef at pizza reachin cooler and desserts removed from the freezer and cold hold until served.
      • Plumbing is not in good repair and proper working order in several areas. Front handsink drain leaks (facility has turned off handsink from use), handsink in dishwash area is only cold water. Rear kitchen handsink is plumbed with direct connection to culinary sink used for food.
      • Lighting in kitchen and dishwash area is poor

    • Date inspected: Jan. 12
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed: ice machine has black residual on the inside side walls.
      • Observed: items at coffee station (creamer, half and half) not under temperature control. Documentation for time as a public health control not available
      • Observed: Several vegetable items (carrots, cauliflower) being offered canned(in-house) in the retail section.
  • International House of Pancake, #496, 980 Edwards Ferry Rd Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Jan. 13
    • Total violations: 3
      • During the time of inspection, the lighting in ceiling above ice machine was very poor.
      • During the time of the inspection, a box of plastic food cups were stored on the ground.
      • Observed Lettuce (51 F), sliced American cheese (51 F), sliced pepper jack (51 F) cold holding at temperatures above 41 F.

    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed: gyro cone being thawed at room temperature.
  • Del Rio Mexican Restaurant, 701-B Market Street East Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Jan. 14
    • Total violations: 5
      • Employee health reporting policy not signed and in-place.
      • Person-in-charge (PIC) not aware of written procedures for vomit/diarrheal event clean -up.
      • Dishwasher is not sanitizing after cleaning dishes. 0ppm observed.
      • Wiping cloth stored in bucket >200ppm chlorine
      • Dishwasher does not have an audio/visual means to observe low detergent and low sanitizer.
  • Chick-Fil-A, 1002 Edwards Ferry Rd. NE Leesburg, VA 20175
    • Date inspected: Jan. 18
    • Total violations: 3
      • Observed half and half with an expiration of 1/7/2022.
      • Observed shredded chicken 44F in 2 door cabinet cooler at an improper cold holding temperature and was prepped at 7:20 am.
      • Observed black beans/ corn thawing in a container of water setting on the counter. Person in charge was told that black beans/ corn had been on the counter at about 1 pm EHS found them on the counter about 2 pm.
  • Rocco's NY Pizza & Subs, 62 Plaza St NE #E Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Jan. 18
    • Total violations: 5
      • 2 burner stove (on stainless table in rear corner of kitchen) does not have ventilation hood and grease is collecting on wall.
      • Ceiling over prep area has dust (appears grease from hood is collecting on ceiling allowing dust to hang down over prep and cook area).
      • Cracked lexan pans and lids are no longer cleanable or safe food contact surface.
      • Handsink at 3 basin sink area is not working. The closest handsink is at front counter.
      • Employee observed washing hands in 3 basin sink.
