Leesburg Restaurant Inspections: Violations At 13 Places

During recent restaurant inspections, the Loudoun Health Department found violations at several places around Leesburg and Purcellville.

LEESBURG, VA — Officials from the Loudoun County Health Department inspected multiple restaurants across the Leesburg area from Sept. 29 to Oct. 5, including 13 different locations with violations.

As coronavirus restrictions continue to fluctuate around the state, health inspectors are returning to conduct some restaurant inspections in person. However, some visits, such as those for training purposes, can be conducted virtually.

Violations at restaurants typically focus on factors that can contribute to food contamination. The local health department can also perform a re-inspection to ensure that possible violations have been corrected.

For every observed violation, the inspector provides a specific corrective action that can be completed to rectify the violation. Sometimes these are simple, and violations can be corrected during the course of the inspection.

    • Date inspected: Sept. 29
    • Total violations: 3
      • Live shellstock, mussels, were observed stored in prep cooler with no tag. Manager stated he doesn't' know where the shellfish tag is located.
      • Cut greens were observed stored in cooler and cold holding at 44°F.
      • Raw wood floor was observed in bar area. Bar floor, walls, and ceiling are not easily cleanable. Bar is open to the outdoors as there is only 3 walls.

    • Date inspected: Sept. 29
    • Total violations: 1
      • Observed: Test strips for quaternary ammonia are not present.
  • Tropical Smoothie Cafe, 506 East Market St # A Leesburg, VA 20176
    • Date inspected: Sept. 30
    • Total violations: 5
      • Observed more than 6 bags of cooked chicken (56F, 55F, 45F) on the prep table PIC stated that bags were out since 11 AM.
      • Observed sliced tomatoes and bags of spinach with date marking.
      • Observed food items being stored on the floor of the walk in cooler.
      • Observed ice machine guard with dirt and grime.
      • Observed the walk in freezer with no lighting.

      • Observed no hot water at bathroom hand washing sink.
      • Observed no cold water at hand washing sink near 3 compartment sink.

      • Observed cooked chicken hot holding at improper temperatures in hot holding unit.
      • Observed wet wiping cloth stored on cutting board.
      • Observed knives used on the prep line stored in between two prep units. Equipment is not a clean contact surface.

      • Observed thermometer in store in water next to sanitize solution. PIC explained that they were being calibrated.

      • Observed chicken, noodles, and broccoli in hot holding unit at a temperature of 125F and 130F. PIC stated that the chicken, noodles, and broccoli had been place in the hot holding unit at approximately 10:30AM
      • Observed no lighting in the walk in freezer.
