2 Die In Plane Crash After Flight Left Manassas Regional Airport

A plane that left Manassas Regional Airport crashed in another area of Virginia, killing a Northern Virginia pilot and passenger.

MANASSAS, VA — Two people were killed when a plane that left Manassas Regional Airport crashed in Fluvanna County, Virginia, Sunday, according to state police.

Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office had received 911 calls around 8:54 a.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Miles Jackson Road in Palmyra for a low-flying plane and sound of an explosion. The sheriff's office and state authorities responded and found a plane on fire in a wooded area near Miles Jackson Road. Several fire companies responded to put out the fire.

The plane that crashed was a twin-engine 1975 Rockwell Aero Commander 690A. The pilot, John W. Latham, 63, of Haymarket, and passenger Niiben C.A. Ayivorh, 73, of Burke, were killed. Their bodies were taken to the medical examiner in Richmond for autopsies.

State police say the plane had left Manassas Regional Airport Sunday and was headed to a county airport in Georgetown, South Carolina. There were light rain conditions when the crash happened.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the plane crash to investigate.
