Manassas Regional Airport Celebrates 50 Years

The Manassas Regional Airport, Virginia's busiest general aviation airport, is celebrating 50 years at its current location Monday.

The Manassas Regional Airport celebrates 50 years at its current location Monday, Sept. 29.

Dedicated in 1964, the airport began as 268 acres with a single 3,700 by 100-foot paved runway, a rotating beacon, maintenance hangar, office and 30 T-hangars.

The Manassas Regional Airport first opened June 8, 1932 in what is now Manaport Plaza Shopping Center but relocated due to increased airport activity and encroaching housing development.

In 2012, the airport expanded it main runway to 6,200 feet with a 3,700-foot-long parallel runway. The airport has an FAA control tower and is operational to only general aviation aircraft.

With 899 acres of land, more than 400 based aircraft and more than 85,000 annual aircraft operations, the Manassas Regional Airport is the busiest general aviation airport in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
