Isolated Tornadoes, Thunderstorms Possible For NoVA, DC Region: NWS

VIRGINIA — Hazardous weather will move into Northern Virginia and the D.C. Capital region on Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Localized wind damage is the main concern, though hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out" in the Mid-Atlantic states, according to the Weather Channel.

Special marine warnings may be needed as strong storms capable of producing wind gusts of 34 knots passes over the waters Thursday afternoon and into Friday.

"An ongoing complex of storms this morning could produce wind damage through the day in the Southeast states," the Weather Channel reported on Thursday. "Tonight into early Friday, there is the possibility that a long-lived complex of severe thunderstorms could produce a concentrated area of damaging winds from eastern Texas eastward to southern Alabama and southwest Georgia. Some gusts could be over 75 mph."

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., region. That includes the District of Columbia, Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park.

Affected areas include the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, tidal Potomac River and the I-95 corridor.

Northern Virginia can expect cloudy and cooler are on Thursday, with a couple of showers and a heavy thunderstorm, according to the AccuWeather forecast. The storms can bring flooding downpours, hail and gusty winds.

Expect a high of 72 for the rest of Thursday and a low of 57 in the evening hours as clouds move in, bring a couple of showers. Friday will be cooler with showers and a high of 60, according to AccuWeather.

Saturday and Sunday will be cloudy with an occasional shower, but the weather warms up Monday in Northern Virginia, under mostly cloudy skies. Although temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s, the rain will likely be in the forecast Tuesday and Wednesday, AccuWeather says.

Here is the seven-day forecast from the National Weather Service for the D.C. area.

Cloudy, with a low around 56. East wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Friday: Showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 61. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Friday Night: Showers likely, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Northeast wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Saturday: A slight chance of showers before 8am, then a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 66. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
  • Saturday Night: Showers likely, mainly after 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • Sunday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
  • Sunday Night: A chance of thunderstorms before 8pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 75.
  • Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.
  • Tuesday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Tuesday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
