VIRGINIA — Republican Hung Cao was declared the winner by the Associated Press at 7:21 p.m. on Tuesday. He defeated four other candidates in Tuesday's primary in the U.S. Senate race, according to unofficial returns.

Cao defeated fellow Republicans Eddie Garcia, Jonathan Emord, Chuck Smith and Scott Parkinson. He will face incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine and Jonathan Hardin, who is running as an independent.

While Virginia already chose its primary candidates for U.S. president in the March Super Tuesday election, June's primary focuses on congressional elections and local offices where applicable.

Kaine was not challenged by another member of his party, so there was no Democratic primary for his U.S. Senate seat. Kaine and Jonathan Hardin, who is running as an independent, are already on the ballot for the Nov. 5 general election.

Republican voters had five candidates to chose from in their party's primary: Hung Cao, Eddie Garcia, Jonathan Emord, Chuck Smith and Scott Parkinson. The winner will face both Kane and Hardin in November.
