Fairfax Schools Make Weather Decision For Return From Winter Break

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — As winter weather is forecasted, Fairfax County Public Schools decided to cancel school on Monday, Jan. 3.

Students were supposed to return from winter break on Jan. 3. Now with winter weather in the equation, that return is pushed to Tuesday, Jan. 4. There will be no virtual instruction on Jan. 3. FCPS also canceled activities on school grounds, including appointments for in-person assessments and interventions, extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training, Adult and Community Education classes, Adult High School and GED, and recreation programs and community use by outside groups. School Age Child Care centers will be closed.

For FCPS employees, 12-month employees able to telework should telework or follow supervisor instruction for in-person work. Liberal leave is provided to eligible employees.

Before weather factored into the decision, FCPS had been planning to hold in-person classes despite concerns about rising COVID-19 cases with the more-contagious omicron variant. The school district had held several testing events in the past few days, but those reached capacity before the scheduled ending times. Families should continue to check for testing updates from FCPS online.

In a letter to families, FCPS advised families to keep students with symptoms or exposed to COVID-19 home from school until a negative test result is received.
