WOODBRIDGE, VA — A crash in the Express Lanes of Interstate 95 killed one person and injured two others Tuesday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened around 6:17 a.m. on the northbound I-95 Express Lanes at the 160 mile marker, which is near the Route 123 exit. State police believe an SUV pulled onto the right shoulder due to mechanical issues. The driver and a passenger exited the vehicle and were struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck that veered onto the shoulder. The disabled SUV was also struck.

The driver of the SUV and the Ford F-150 were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The SUV passenger died at the scene. Police are working to notify next-of-kin before identifying the victim publicly.

All Express Lanes were blocked due to the police investigation, according to an alert from the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination on social media. Traffic was being diverted to the general lanes at Route 294/Prince William Parkway. Northbound delays were estimated to extend to two miles.

Authorities expect an extended closure. The Express Lanes are reversible, so they were only facing the northbound direction during the crash.
