2020 Census Results: Milwaukee Shrinks And Wisconsin Grows

Milwaukee's population fell to almost 940,000 residents over the past decade. Here are the places seeing the biggest boom.

MILWAUKEE, WI β€” The 2020 Census has released its final results, showing how communities across Wisconsin are divvying up the state's modest population boost.

"We are excited to reach this milestone of delivering the first detailed statistics from the 2020 Census," said acting Census Bureau Director Ron Jarmin. "We appreciate the public's patience as Census Bureau staff worked diligently to process these data and ensure it meets our quality standards."

According to the data, from 2010 to 2020, Wisconsin's population grew by 206,732 people β€” about 3.6 percent β€” to 5,893,718 residents. The U.S. on the whole saw a 7.4 percent population growth.

Dane County had the highest population growth with 73,431 people, which is a 15 percent increase. The county has 561,504 people living in it per census data.

Vilas County had the highest amount of vacant houses with 55.9 percent of its houses vacant. Vilas County grew by 1,617 people over the past decade, the census said. Overall, 11 percent of Wisconsin houses are vacant.

20 Wisconsin counties saw population decline from 2010 to 2020. Milwaukee County saw its population decrease by 0.9 percent or 8,246 people.

The City of Milwaukee's population dropped by about 3 percent, per census data.

Milwaukee County still has the highest population in the state with 939,489 people, per census data. The other highest populated counties are Dane, Waukesha and Brown counties.
