Alec Baldwin's Rust case dismissal came as a relief for his family, but the shocking twist in the trial wasn't a cause for celebration.

On July 12, the third day of Alec's involuntary manslaughter trial in New Mexico, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer threw out the case due to a late discovery of evidence. The actor, who was facing up to 18 months in prison if the jury had found him guilty, can't have the criminal charge brought against him again since the case was dismissed with prejudice.

A source tells PEOPLE that Alec, 66, and his wife Hilaria, 40, are "relieved that it's over." The pair cried while hugging each other in the courtroom directly after the judge's decision.

"It's been a sad situation, and there is no winning here. They didn't celebrate," says the source. "They were very worried and are grateful now that they are able to spend the rest of the summer with their kids."

The trial for involuntary manslaughter was dismissed by a judge Friday after she ruled that key evidence over a fatal shooting on the set of "Rust" had been withheld from the defense.

The couple, who married in 2012, share seven young children, and their home life will be the subject of an upcoming TLC reality series, called The Baldwins, currently in the works for a 2025 premiere.

Alec's daughter Ireland, 28, whom he shares with ex-wife Kim Basinger, reacted to her dad's case dismissal on Instagram, simply sharing a throwback photo of him and adding a heart emoji after the news.

Prior to the surprise twist in the Rust case, a source told PEOPLE that Hilaria had "faith that Alec will be found not guilty."

"She's incredibly supportive.... It's stressful for them both," the source said at the time. "This is not how they want to spend their summer. They can't wait for it to be over."

Alec held the prop gun that fired live rounds, hitting director Joel Souza and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western movie Rust in New Mexico. Hutchins, 42, was killed in the Oct 21, 2021, incident. She is survived by husband Matthew, son Andros, now 11, plus her sister and parents. There are still pending civil lawsuits relating to the death of Hutchins.

In an Instagram message July 13, Alec spoke out about the outcome in his Rust case, writing, "There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now. To all of you, you will never know how much I appreciate your kindness toward my family."

An attorney for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the Rust armorer who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to prison time, said in a statement after Alec's case was dismissed: "We will be filing an additional motion for Hannah’s release and to dismiss, in light of the judge’s extensive findings."
