Jason Derulo goes by many titles — singer, songwriter, fitness aficionado, TikToker — but his most important role is dad to his son Jason King.

The YouTube Music Award winner and his then-girlfriend Jena Frumes welcomed their son on May 8, 2021. The former couple started dating just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic after meeting at the gym and went on to grow their social media audiences together.

Both popular on TikTok (Derulo has over 55 million followers, Frumes more than 11 million), they began making videos together and amassing a shared following invested in their budding love story. For Derulo, the relationship came at the perfect time for his desire to start a family.

"I was just starting to really get baby fever, I guess with age, and you meet someone you really, really connect with, and it happened at just the right time," he said on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2021.

Now, Derulo and Frumes' toddler is featured on their social media accounts, trying new foods, playing and attending events. On his 3rd birthday in May 2024, Derulo shared his pride for his son on Instagram.

"Where did those three years go? I love you more than anything baby boy!" he wrote alongside a montage of father-son moments.

Derulo and Frumes welcomed Jason King on May 8, 2021.

Ten days later, the new mom shared a series of photos on Instagram from the hospital and the baby's first moments at home.

"A glimpse of my first week with our healthy handsome little king 👑🥺💛," Frumes captioned the post. "Life now has so much more meaning & I am so grateful. I'm so so so in love with this little boy he's everything I never knew I needed👶🏽🙏🏽 05/08/2021✨."

Months before Jason King's arrival, the couple revealed the sex of their baby exclusively to PEOPLE. The pair announced the news with a blue fireworks display at the Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas.

Weeks after sharing the initial news of the birth, Derulo and Frumes announced the name of their new baby: Jason King.

Derulo revealed that he wanted to make his son a junior because all his siblings had given birth to daughters, leaving him solely responsible for carrying on their last name.

"My brother has girls, and my sister has a girl, so I knew we needed a boy to carry on the name, literally. We needed to have a boy because the Derulo name was out," the singer told PEOPLE in July 2021. "I spoke him into existence."

Derulo added, "I wanted my name to continue to thrive, and I also thought that it would bring me closer to him."

Four months after welcoming their son, Derulo and Frumes parted ways.

Following the split, Derulo posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Jena and I have decided to part ways. She is an amazing mother but we feel being apart at this time will allow us to be the best versions of ourselves and the best parents we could be."

The former couple have since come together to co-parent their son. In November 2021, Derulo told PEOPLE that he and Frumes had an "amazing relationship."

"It's a beautiful thing [that we can support each other], especially given our new relationship: co-parenting," he said. "We love [our son] more than anything, and his wellbeing is really important to us. I'm really attentive of her wellbeing as well, and I want her to be good. I care about her a lot."

Jason does anything and everything with his dad: In late 2021, Derulo shared a video on Instagram documenting all of the different places he takes his son, from the gym to the recording studio.

In April 2024, concertgoers even celebrated Jason King's arrival on his dad's stage by singing "Baby Shark." A few months later, Derulo's son attended another one of his dad's concerts in Dubai.

Derulo’s Instagram followers have also seen the singer don matching outfits with his son. In one sweet snapshot, Derulo cradled Jason as he smiled for the camera. The father-son duo wore red shirts with black shorts, and the singer's son also rocked a pair of red-and-black baby sneakers.

"Oh imma love dressing Jason jr up like me 😭," Derulo captioned the post. Frumes replied in the comment section, "🥺❤️."

As he's gotten older, Jason King has learned new ways to communicate with his parents.

In a 2022 Instagram post, Frumes wrote, “He knows so much sign language so even though he doesn’t say many words yet we are able to communicate so well now. Highly suggest teaching your baby sign language if you haven’t or are expecting‼️"

The model concluded, "He’s so much fun he makes waking up each day exciting.”

He’s already a lover of music

In July 2021, Derulo opened up about life at home with his son, who "seems to really adore music already.”

"From when he was in the womb, he would start kicking whenever I would play music on my phone, because every morning I played the song that I had did the night prior. Now, it's the only thing that keeps him calm," Derulo told PEOPLE.

The singer continued, "He'll be going crazy one minute and then you start playing some music and he's okay."
