After America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders dropped on Netflix in June 2024, the docuseries has intrigued fans, and many are wondering if it's the last they’ll see of the squad.

The seven-episode docuseries follows aspiring rookies and returning veterans as the dancers vie for one of the 36 spots on the squad. Showcasing the rigor, unwavering devotion and emotional complexity of being a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, the series delves into the lives of the women both professionally and personally as they navigate their identity in and out of their uniform.

Bringing forward narratives of grief, mental health, self-esteem, faith and longevity of passion, the docuseries goes deeper into the women’s lives with every episode.

America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders has garnered mixed reactions — from controversy over the dancers' compensation to promoting conversations about beauty standards, while others have said it's an inspiring demonstration of resilience.

Regardless of where viewers lie, the docuseries has consistently stayed in Netflix's top 10 list since its release and its popularity has sparked the question of whether the show will come back for a second season.

Here’s everything we know so far about a potential season 2 of America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

On the same day America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders dropped on Netflix, the Dallas Cowboys released an official statement regarding the series, expressing enthusiasm for it and hopes that it offers a glimpse into the unparalleled hard work put in by the dancers.

The statement ends with an open-ended tinge of optimism, hinting that the organization isn’t opposed to a second season — or possibly more.

“While plans are currently undetermined for a second season, the Dallas Cowboys are excited to see the response from the world in the early stages of the show's release in anticipation of hopefully signing on for more seasons,” the statement reads.

It also seems like those closest to the team are also on board. In an interview with Andrew Freund in June 2024, DCC director Kelli Finglass, responded to the host's praise for the cast by saying, “season 2,” accompanied by a “chop-chop” motion.

What has America’s Sweetheart’s director Greg Whiteley said about a potential season 2?

Whiteley, an award-winning documentarian, revealed to Variety in June 2024 that he would certainly be open to further exploring the DCC universe, especially as he felt that the show came to an end just as the crew was “starting to hit [their] stride.”

“I felt like we were just starting to get there as we were wrapping up, and I’d love to have more time to see if we can get deeper and deeper with more and more of the team,” he added.

Whiteley also mentioned that the episodes of the series were constantly changing, with the “main characters” and structure not solidified until the last few weeks.

Filming for America’s Sweethearts took place from the auditions in May 2023 to the end of the Cowboy’s football season in January 2024, so, relatively speaking, the series exhibited a quick turnaround. Still, the director noted that, in the end, he wished he had more time.

“If you were to give us another month, a month and a half, on this show, it would be a much different show, and would, in my estimation, be way better," Whiteley explained.

There is no official confirmation on the series return of America’s Sweethearts as of now. However, the show’s director, Greg Whiteley, members of the cast and the Dallas Cowboys themselves have expressed enthusiasm for the prospect.

That said, nothing has been officially confirmed. If the show were to follow the 2024 season, filming would need to begin immediately — as the squad is currently in the midst of training camp, which concludes on July 19.

Conversely, if the series return follows a similar structure to the first (including auditions and training camp), fans would need to wait until the 2025 season finishes.

While there hasn’t been confirmation of a second season of America's Sweethearts, if the show is greenlighted for a return, viewers can probably expect a mix of new and returning faces — depending on when or if filming begins. A few DCC mainstays (such as Finglass, DCC choreographer Judy Trammell and Charlotte Jones) are likely to be featured.

In the last episode of America’s Sweethearts, Finglass has the dancers put their hard-earned uniforms on two different racks: one for those re-auditioning and one for those retiring. However, as it becomes all too clear by the end of the series, one’s spot is never guaranteed, regardless of seniority.

Charly Barby and Kelly Villares auditioned again and made it into training camp as rookies. Meanwhile, veterans who auditioned again and earned spots in the 2023 season include Reece Weaver, Anna Kate Sundvold, Camille Sturdivant, Brooklyn Davis and Zoe Dale.

Other familiar faces from the show — such as Madeline Salter, Jada Mclean, Sophy Laufer and Armani Latimer — also returned to training camp as three, four and five-year veteran candidates.

While Kelcey Wetterberg’s retirement from the squad was anticipated at the end of the show, others didn’t reveal until the final hour that they’d be hanging up their uniform for the last time.

Claire Wolford, a fourth-year veteran, revealed she wouldn’t be re-auditioning. In an emotional goodbye, Wolford said it was a hard decision, but she was at peace with it.

Among the biggest turning points was Victoria Kalina, who initially signaled that she would be re-auditioning as a fifth-year veteran but ultimately decided to officially retire from the DCC. Feeling as though she’d given all she could to the organization, Kalina said she was ready to move on, no longer needing to prove herself.
