The appointment has even prompted an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times, declaring that this could potentially take a lot of the glimmer off the Oscars. Only not so fast. Gervais may often prove himself hysterically entertaining at Hollywood awards ceremonies – as his riff on the state of the crowd at last month’s Emmys proved – but there are still other show people who can lead the Oscars to glory.
