BAFTA Says It Ejected Audience Member Who Crashed Stage During Oppenheimer Best Film Win

One of Oppenheimer’s big wins at the 2024 BAFTA Awards was overshadowed by an uninvited guest. 

On Sunday evening, the biographical thriller was nominated in 13 categories, winning seven. The awards show was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

When writer-director-producer Christopher Nolan, producers Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, and actor Cillian Murphy took the stage to accept the best film award, they were also joined by someone they’d never worked with before.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British Academy declined to name the person, but said they were “removed by security” following the stunt.

“A social media prankster was removed by security last night after joining the winners of the final award on stage — We are taking this very seriously and don’t wish to grant him any publicity by commenting further,” a spokesperson for BAFTA added in a statement.

The outlet added that the prankster is reportedly a YouTuber who previously crashed the Brit Awards and FIFA Ballon d’Or awards in France.

During the live broadcast, Nolan, 53, Thomas, 52, Roven, 74, and Murphy, 47, were also joined on stage by presenter Michael J. Fox and BAFTA host David Tennant.

The prankster joined the group on stage just as Thomas was encouraging her team to share the moment with her.

“Where are you? Come on, all of you!,” the producer said as the YouTuber also made his way up with the Oppenheimer crew. None of them seemed to acknowledge his presence during her speech. 

The man appeared to come from the audience, and like the others at the event, he also wore a suit and tie. 

Despite the snafu, Oppenheimer still saw great success. Nolan took home the award for best director and Murphy earned the trophy for leading actor.

The film was also a big hit with Prince William, per The Daily Telegraph.

“I’m a big fan of Christopher Nolan so I’ll be pleased if he wins... I loved Oppenheimer," the newspaper reported the prince saying.  

William, 41, who has been president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, also admitted that while he has not “watched Barbie yet,” but still has seeing the film on his to-do list. 

Oppenheimer and Barbie, two polar opposite films, dominated the box office when they were both released during the same weekend in July 2023. 

Nolan’s blockbuster earned $82.4 million at the box office and went on to make over $912 million worldwide throughout its theatrical run.

The movie is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography titled American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. It follows scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Murphy) as he tries to build the atomic bomb during World War II.
