An autopsy has revealed the cause of death for Taxi and Grease star Jeff Conaway, who passed away at age 60 last May.

The actor, who publicly struggled with addiction, died from a major internal infection, the Associated Press reports.

A coroner says that a toxicology test was not conducted because Conaway was hospitalized for weeks before his death, so his blood would have tested clean.

The actor was taken off life support on May 27 after being hospitalized with pneumonia and sepsis.

Conaway worked with Dr. Drew Pinsky and appeared on Celebrity Rehab. Pinsky told PEOPLE that the actor “was a terribly complex case with chronic pain, opiate addiction and severe childhood trauma.”
