Your Field Guide to the Many Girlfriends, Ex and Otherwise, of One Direction

One Direction, so many girlfriends.

The boys, as they’re lovingly referred to by Directioners, have – in the manner of young, attractive, famous and wealthy men since time immemorial – had a lot of girlfriends. Some have been serious, some have been not. Some have been famous, some have been not. Here, a field guide to the many girlfriends of One Direction. Pay attention, there will be a short quiz afterwards.

Harry Styles

Harry has had quite a few girlfriends including Felicity Skinner (a girl from his hometown), when they were 15

… and then his 14-year-elder Caroline Flack, who interviewed him for The X Factor. Fans did not take well to that one, apparently crafting a voodoo doll of Flack in a 1D fanzine.

Then, perhaps most famously, Styles dated another musician you may have heard of: Taylor Swift. SwiftStyles first met at the Kids’ Choice Awards in 2012, and were in the “matching necklace” phase of their relationship by fall. Then they were broken up by January 2013. Like tears in rain.

After an appropriate mourning period, Styles went on a few dates with none other than Kendall Jenner. KenHar visited snowboard shops and had breakfast, but their relationship eventually went the way of all flesh in February 2014, purportedly over their careers. Rumor has it, though, that they’ve heated back up while 1D has been on hiatus.

Louis Tomlinson

Tomlinson started dating Hannah Walker in March 2010, before the stress of a long-distance relationship drove them apart in 2011

at which point he took up with Eleanor Calder …

with whom he stayed for four years, before they broke up in March of 2015. News then broke in June of that year that Tomlinson was expecting a child with Briana Jungwirth, a stylist pal he met through “mutual friends.” In that same month, he was spotted strolling the grounds of Glastonbury Music Festival in England with model Tamara Bell. Jungwirth gave birth to son Freddie on Jan. 21; Tomlinson was present for the delivery, but days later, was spotted out with rumored new girlfriend Danielle Campbell.

Liam Payne

Payne has had only two serious girlfriends the Internet can track: Danielle Peazer and Sophia Smith. Payne admitted – shamefully – to “emotionally cheating” on Peazer with Smith – having “fancied the pants off” Smith even while he was with Peazer. Then he was with Smith for more than two years before breaking things off in October. Pretty boring compared to the rest – not even a Jenner in the stable!

Niall Horan

Horan was dating one Holly Scally in 2010 when he first entered The X Factor

but he broke up with her a month in. Rumors have abounded about Horan and Selena Gomez

and Horan’s few dates with Ellie Goulding were a long-rumored point of inspiration for Ed Sheeran‘s “Don’t.” All parties involved deny that, though.

Zayn Malik

Not in 1D anymore, but hey, let’s enumerate his exes regardless. Lightning round: Malik and Rebecca Ferguson met on The X Factor, but broke up after four months, and Malik called the relationship a “mistake.” Then there was Geneva Lane – the pair also met on The X Factor (which apparently is like Tinder for talented British types) – but they were also not fated to last, and Lane eventually called Malik a “massive c—.” So, uh, there.

But Malik’s most visible relationship was with Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards, to whom he was engaged from August 2013 to August 2015.

Since that ended, Malik’s been linked to model Gigi Hadid, which the pair made drastically more official by costarring in Malik’s first solo video, “Pillowtalk.” Are you fully caught up now? Prepared for the quiz? Good. It will be rigorous.
