… on the same day as his chemistry test with Mandy Moore for — you guessed it! — This Is Us. The actor was in the running to take on the role of Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia), but ended up skipping his audition to go on a fishing trip.

"So I went in and read, and it went very well, and they wanted me to come and do a chemistry read with Mandy Moore," the actor said during an interview on the podcast The Ladygang. "But this will tell you how much I love to fish."

"I had a 10-day fishing trip planned. It's my life! Fishing is a big part of my life and it was this 10-day fishing trip and my agent says, ‘We have to test, and they really like you, and this, this, and that,'" he recalled. "And I said, ‘Oh. I'm supposed to go on a fishing trip'… And he's like, ‘Ok, yea…so? I mean this is a big thing.' And I said, ‘You know what? I'm going to do my fishing trip, so…'"

… while auditioning for Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens — though he didn't know what role he was reading for at the time since the audition was so top secret.

"With films that top secret, they don't give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you're auditioning for the baddie," he explained to Uproxx. "If you're me, you then put some ridiculous voice on … [The casting director] was just sitting there, and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of 'koohh paaaah' [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like 10 shots she's like, 'You got anything else?' I was like, 'No.'"

He's an Oscar-nominated actor, but Gyllenhaal has another accolade to his name, too: one of the worst auditionees for Lord of the Rings. The actor tried out for the part of Frodo (Elijah Wood), but his accent was the nail in his Middle Earth coffin. “I remember auditioning for The Lord of the Rings and going in and not being told that I needed a British accent," he said. "I really do remember Peter Jackson saying to me, 'You know that you have to do this in a British accent?' We heard back it was literally one of the worst auditions."

Actors have to be ready to do a lot to nab a job, but Jones wasn't quite prepared to pole dance without a pole during her audition for Coyote Ugly, an experience she called "one of the worst moments in my entire life." Afterward, the Mad Men actress was ready to ditch the business. "I just turned beet red," she said. During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the actress revealed she turned down the opportunity to try out for Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele because she's not the biggest fan of scary movies. "He let me read it and asked me to audition," the actress told Meyers. “I was like, ‘Aw, man. Look, I don’t do scary movies, dog. I don’t do that. You know, that’s demonized kind of stuff. Margot Robbie may have landed The Wolf of Wall Street — the film that catapulted the Aussie actress to stardom — opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, but Wilde revealed on The Howard Stern Show that she missed out on the opportunity due to her age. "I heard that I was too sophisticated [for the part]. I thought, 'oh, that sounds nice. I like that feedback. I didn't get the part but I'm a very sophisticated person,' " she said. "And then I found out later they actually said old." But Wilde has no hard feelings: "I thought she kicked so much ass in that movie."

No matter your past work, nothing can prepare you for auditioning for the very-sexy Fifty Shades series. “That audition was so uncomfortable!” she told Cosmopolitan. “It’s exactly what you thought it would be: a big monologue but very, very sexual.
