The Spider-Man–adjacent superhero movie, in which Johnson plays New York City paramedic Cassandra Webb with abilities that let her see the future, underperformed at the box office and was met with negative reviews. In a new interview with Bustle, Johnson, 34, admitted the final film wasn't what she signed up for. "It was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now," she said. BROWN/AFP via Getty "But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, 'Wait, what?' " added Johnson. "But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand," said the Fifty Shades of Grey star. Johnson explained that it is "so hard to get movies made," and oftentimes "decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee." You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms," said the actress, who started her own production company, TeaTime Pictures. Added Johnson, "My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bulls---." Madame Web, directed by S.J. Clarkson, also stars Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Adam Scott and Emma Roberts. While hosting Saturday Night Live this past weekend, Sweeney, 26, made a joke in her opening monologue at the expense of the superhero movie. "You might have seen me in Anyone But You or Euphoria," the actress began, before joking, "You definitely did not see me in Madame Web." Madame Web is in theaters now.
