David Foster's Daughter Defends Him Against Claim He 'Abandoned' His Older Children for 2-Year-Old Son Rennie

'I literally just talked to my dad five minutes ago,' David's daughter Amy S. Foster replied to an Instagram user who criticized her father's parenting

David Foster's daughter is defending him against criticism that he "abandoned" his older children.

The music producer, 74, shared a video of his 2½-year-old son Rennie drumming to Michael Jackson's hit "Rock with You" on Instagram on Friday. The comments on the post are full of praise for Rennie's musical talent, but one Instagram user took the opportunity to criticize his parenting.

"Lol!!!! He's the dad.....he's also got daughters (he abandoned) older than me," the user wrote in response to someone else.

Foster's daughter Amy S. Foster replied to the comment, defending her father.

"Hi....I'm a daughter...absolutely no abandonment," Amy, 50, wrote, tagging the user.

"I literally just talked to my dad five minutes ago," she continued. "Are you sticking up for us?"

Amy admonished the person for seeing a video of a young boy drumming and choosing to turn it into something negative.

"All you have to do is look at the comments and Rennie's sisters have all chimed in with compliments....We're great," she continued.

"We love our dad. Our dad loves us and we love how our dad is with Rennie," she added.

Rennie is David's only son and only child with his current wife, Katharine McPhee, whom he married in 2019.

"At this point in my life, it's different again," the Grammy-winning producer said. "Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I'm still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now."

In a separate interview with PEOPLE in 2020 before Rennie's birth, David said he has some regrets about parenting mistakes he made with his five daughters — Amy, Allison Jones, 53, Sara Foster, 42, Erin Foster, 41, and Jordan Foster, 37.

"I missed a lot because I didn't raise them," he admitted. "The geography was really tough. That was my own doing and a regret that I have, but it was what it was and there was no changing it. So I did the best I could, which was quite imperfect at times. Plus, I worked so much. I mean, I've made a pound of music in my life."
