Demi Lovato has always kept it real. The singer-songwriter (who uses she/they pronouns) became a star at the age of 10 with her role on Barney & Friends, and by 30, she had recorded eight albums, performed around the world and served as a judge on The X-Factor, all while speaking candidly about her mental health and addiction struggles.

And now Lovato, 31, is opening up about her beauty routine, with her announcement as the new spokesperson Xeomin, an anti-wrinkle injection used to improve the look of frown lines.

"I’ve always believed in making choices that are empowering, [keep you] true to yourself and help you look and feel your best," the star tells PEOPLE in a candid sit-down discussing their new partnership. "I’ve incorporated Xeomin into my routine every three months, and it gives me the results I want while still looking like myself. There are times I like to get glam and times when I don’t like to wear makeup at all, and this gives me the confidence for both."

For Lovato, it's important not to gatekeep her beauty routine as she strives for full transparency with her fans and followers.

"I’m always transparent with my fans, and this is something I wanted to share. It normalizes it and takes the taboo away from injectables," she says. "It’s all about what makes you feel like your best self. Don’t listen to naysayers. Do what makes you feel comfortable in your own skin."

Zeroing in on a regimented beauty routine is also key for the star as she preps for her upcoming wedding to Canadian musician Jordan “Jutes” Lutes.

"I use Renée Rouleau skin-care products and Xeomin," Lovato says, adding that she gets injections about every three months for the best results. "I’ve also been growing my hair out. I don’t know what it will look like for the wedding, but hopefully it’s longer and still the same color."

When it comes to their off-duty style, Lovato is most comfortable in a laid-back look.

"I love a good sweatsuit and a very minimal makeup look," she says. "Just tinted moisturizer, a little blush, concealer and brow gel, and I’m good to go."

And while glam is a big part of Lovato's day to day. there is one step she'll never miss.

"I never sleep in my makeup. It doesn't matter how late the night goes, it doesn't matter if I'm up until the morning, I take my makeup off and I do my skincare routine and I'm very diligent about it."
