The 2024 Emmy nominations have been announced, and this year's lineup proves just how competitive things were on the small screen.

New shows like Baby Reindeer and Shōgun had big moments, as did mainstays like The Crown, The Morning Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Like most years, the nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards also had some major twists among the pool of nominees.

Some of the surprises included Lessons in Chemistry and Fallout's success and What We Do in the Shadows' lead Matt Berry earning a nod for outstanding actor in a comedy series. Reservation Dogs also had a big year, earning nods for outstanding comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.

Other shows, like The Curse starring Emma Stone, Expats starring Nicole Kidman and The Regime, starring Kate Winslet were snubbed. While The Regime earned a nod for its costume design, Expats and The Curse didn't receive a single nomination.

The pool of nominees for outstanding actress in a limited series or a movie included Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country, Brie Larson for Lessons in Chemistry, Juno Temple for Fargo, Sofía Vergara for Griselda and Naomi Watts for Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

Netflix'sThe Gentleman, starring Theo James, also didn't receive any nominations. Instead, outstanding lead actor in a drama series nominees included Donald Glover for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Gary Oldman for Slow Horses, Walton Goggins for Fallout, Dominic West for The Crown, Hiroyuki Sanada for Shogun and Idris Elba for Hijack – which was another major surprise.

Other snubs include Kelsey Grammer being left off the list for the Frasier reboot after sweeping the Emmy nominations during the show's original 11-year run. Allison Janney also didn't snag a nod for her role in Palm Royale, while costars Kristen Wiig and Carol Burnett did.

While Lily Gladstone made history for her nomination for Under the Bridge, her costar Riley Keough was not recognized for the series, and Shōgun's Cosmo Jarvis was yet another snub as he wasn't named among the nominees for lead actor in a drama series despite leading the FX series.

John Mulaney was also not nominated this year despite the success of his Netflix Is a Joke Fest series, John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA, and Masters of the Air similarly went largely unrecognized, though it earned nods for sound mixing and editing and its main title theme.

3 Body Problem earned a surprise nod for outstanding drama series, as did Lamorne Morris for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for Fargo.

Lessons in Chemistry scored a surprising number of nominations, including outstanding limited or anthology series and outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for Larson, who played scientist turned cooking show mogul Elizabeth Zott in the Apple TV+ series, while Berry earned his first-ever Emmy nomination for the FX vampire series What We Do in the Shadows.

Last year, Steve Martin was the only part of his Only Murders in the Building leading trio (which he stars alongside Martin Short and Selena Gomez) to earn a nod. But this year, both Martin and Short were nominated in outstanding actor in a comedy series, while Gomez earned her first ever Emmy nomination in the outstanding actress in a comedy series category.

In reality TV, So You Think You Can Dance did not earn a nomination for outstanding choreography, though two former contestants were nominated in that category: Kiki Nyemchek for the Dick Van Dyke special and Jenna Johnson for Dancing with the Stars.

New Top Chef host Kristen Kish, a former contestant winner, took the reins from longtime host Padma Lakshmi, and earned a nod for outstanding host for a reality or reality competition program.
