Officials have reportedly identified the person killed in a shooting at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13.

According to multiple outlets, including CNN, Reuters and The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the man has been identified as 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said during a press conference on Sunday, June 14, per CNN, that Comperatore "died trying to protect his family."

“Corey was a girl-dad. Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday,” the politician said, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “He was so excited last night to be there with [Trump] and the community.”

In a Facebook post, Comperatore's sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, wrote: "The PA Trump Rally claimed the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. The hatred for one man took the life of the one man we loved the most. He was a hero that shielded his daughters. His wife and girls just lived through the unthinkable and unimaginable."

"My baby brother just turned 50 and had so much life left to experience," she added. "Hatred has no limits and love has no bounds. Pray for my sister-in-law, nieces, my mother, sister, me and his nieces and nephews as this feels like a terrible nightmare but we know it is our painful reality."

GoFundMe page has since been set up to provide aid to the Comperatore family amid their loss.

"Saturday night, our friend and family, Allyson, lost her father due to a senseless, tragic act at the Trump Rally in Butler," a post on the fundraising page reads.

Two other people were critically injured during the rally, Dan Laurent, a spokesperson for Allegheny General Hospital previously told PEOPLE. The shooter was also declared dead after being "neutralized" by Secret Service agents, spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Trump, 78, said in a post on Truth Social that he was "shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear."

The former president, who was in the middle of speaking when shots rang out, was safely taken away from the scene. Officials have said the shooting was an assassination attempt.

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger told PEOPLE that the shooter was on a building outside the venue.

The investigation is being led by the FBI.

"Special agents of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office responded immediately, to include crisis response team members and evidence response technicians," the bureau said in a statement to PEOPLE. "We will continue to support this investigation with the full resources of the FBI, alongside our partners at the U.S. Secret Service and state and local law enforcement."

Anyone with information that may help the investigation is asked to call the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
