I’m no spy, but I did become a detective the second I saw the cropped trench Paltrow wore in New York City on Monday — and I seriously hope it becomes the new “It” jacket. Why? I’ve worn my full-length trench coat more times than I can count, but sometimes the length gets in the way. I’ve been on a mission to find my very own cropped trench, a lighter alternative to the full-length trenches Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Lawrence have worn in previous seasons. For example, the water-resistant Lucky Brand style pictured above falls around the hips, while this Steve Madden pick is cropped closer to the belly button — all that really matters is that it’s not a floor-length version. This green color is also something different than khaki and still matches the darker, moody ambiance that fall brings — and it’s nearly $150 off. Those are a must-get. The useful pockets match the utilitarian function of a trench plus, I’ve worn my plain trousers into oblivion. These cargo pants from Nordstrom come in sizes 00 to 16 and look similar to regular trousers without exterior pockets but somehow also way more trendy.
