Luke Bryan Explains Why His Eyes May Look Red and Clarifies He's Not 'Smoking Pot'

"My dad would take me on these fishing trips and I would be in the back of the boat like wheezing, maybe in need of an EpiPen," the country star told Audacy

One of Luke Bryan's main loves is fishing, and he'll continue the activity even if it hurts him.

In a new interview with Audacy's Totally Private program, the country star revealed he's allergic to bass and opened up about the symptoms, which could lead some people to think he was smoking marijuana.

"Just so we know, if I do interviews and I look like I’ve been smoking pot, that’s not true. I’ve been catching bass," said Bryan, 47, explaining that he'd done so the day of the interview.

"If I touch a bass, my eyes will get red, my hands will swell if I have to take the hook out," added the "Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day" singer. "I’ll get in front of it. I’m like, 'I know I’m going to fish today,' so I’ll take an Allegra in the morning."

An avid fisher since childhood, Bryan "spent years not knowing" about his allergy. "My dad would take me on these fishing trips, and I would be in the back of the boat like wheezing, maybe in need of an EpiPen," he recalled.

"My Dad was just like, ['Suck it up,'] we just thought it was allergies [to] like, the trees, but it’s actually touching the bass," he explained of the realization.

Since then, Bryan has learned he's "not all alone" in the struggle. "So, maybe I can bring awareness," he said with a laugh, joking that he'll launch a "new foundation" to benefit "those who've been cursed by the touch" of bass.

"It's really sunfish, like a brim, a shell cracker," elaborated Bryan, naming different types of fish that give him an allergic reaction. "Any of those things, they wipe me out pretty good."

The "One Margarita" singer is currently gearing up to hit the road on his Mind of a Country Boy Tour, which launches April 17 and continues through September.

Elsewhere in the interview with Audacy's Totally Private, Bryan spoke about how he's approached his career differently over his decades in country music.

"My thing [now] is to just have fun writing songs, have fun doing the shows. I think for 10 years I’ve just overworked myself to where all my friends, when I see them, they’re like, ‘You’re overworking yourself,’ and I’m like, ‘I know, I can’t tell people no,’" he said. "I’ve been home four weekends in a row, and I have not done that in 17 or 18 years."
