Florida authorities are now saying that a man who was initially believed to have been fatally shot may have died due to a fireworks accident.

In a statement on Monday, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) said they were conducting a homicide investigation concerning a “shooting” that happened in the early morning hours in the 600 block of Osceola Street.

“When officers arrived, they discovered an adult male victim in the roadway suffering from injuries sustained in the shooting and immediately began rendering aid,” the department said in a Facebook post. “Sadly, the victim succumbed to his injuries on scene.”

The victim has not been publicly identified.

The department in its initial statement also asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them or call Crime Stoppers.

However, in a later update, police said that the man's death may actually have been the result of an accident involving fireworks.

“TPD’s Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and have determined this is possibly an accidental death caused by fireworks,” said the department in its update.

“At this time, the investigation remains ongoing pending a full autopsy to determine the manner of death," police said.

When contacted by PEOPLE on Wednesday, the Tallahassee Police Department did not have any additional information to share.
