Man Wounded at Donald Trump Rally Shooting Released from Hospital, Second Man Remains in 'Serious' Condition

One of the two people wounded in the July 13 "assassination attempt" of Donald Trump at his Pennsylvania campaign rally has now been released from the hospital.

David Dutch, 57, was discharged from Allegheny General Hospital, while James Copenhaver, 74, remains in a "serious but stable condition," Allegheny Health Network confirmed to PEOPLE. Per NBC News, Dutch was released from the hospital on Wednesday, July 24.

Per local media outlet KDKA, Dutch — whose nickname is Jake — is a U.S. Marine veteran. His sister, Jennifer Veri-Grazier, previously spoke to The New York Times and said her brother had suffered damage to his liver and broken ribs and required surgery following the incident.

Following the shooting at the rally in Butler, Pa., the FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park as the man who opened fire at the former president. Crooks was fatally shot by Secret Service agents after he fired shots from the rooftop of a building about 400 feet away from Trump, 78.

Trump was injured in the shooting before he was rushed off stage by Secret Service agents. He later said he was grazed by a bullet in a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social. 

Trump said he was "shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear," but stated at the time that he was okay.

Former fire chief Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed in the incident while "trying to protect his family,” per Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. The late firefighter was laid to rest on Friday, July 19, with Billy Ray Cyrus performing at his funeral. 

PEOPLE confirmed Cyrus, 62, sang a rendition of “Amazing Grace” and his 1992 song “Some Gave All” as a special music selection during a celebration of life service for Comperatore at Cabot Church in Cabot, Pa., where The New York Times reports he was a longtime member.

"Corey Comperatore is a Army reservist veteran and former firefighter chief. [Cyrus] BRC has always been passionate about honoring troops and first responders," a source said of the performance. "Today he was honored to join the family and perform during the service."

Comperatore's friend Randy Reamer, who is the president of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company in Sarver, Pa., where Comperatore lived, told PEOPLE, “He was passionate about his family."

"When he was here at the fire station, he was passionate about the fire company,” Reamer added.

Following the shooting, Trump spoke to the New York Post about the "very surreal experience." “The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle," he said.

“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” Trump continued. “I’m supposed to be dead.”

A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.
