Meghan Markle Has Proud Wife Moment with Prince Harry in Nigeria: ‘You See Why I'm Married to Him?'

Meghan Markle is one proud wife!

After Prince Harry delivered a heartfelt speech about mental health during the first stop of their Nigeria tour on Friday, May 10, Meghan, 42, was quick to heap praise on her husband.

“You see why I'm married to him?” Meghan said to cheers as she was handed the mic. “It’s so inspiring because he speaks the truth.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex both delivered an inspiring welcome address at the inaugural mental health summit put on by the GEANCO Foundation at the Lightway Academy in Abuja.

The summit kicked off with some street-style dancing from some of the students at the school, with the couple then being welcomed by school director Joyce Agbese.

Harry then took the mic and asked the teachers and children for a show of hands as he questioned, “If I say mental health do you know what it means?”

“In some cases around the world, in more than you would believe, there is a stigma when it comes to mental health. Too many people don't want to talk about it because it's invisible. It's something in our mind that we can't see. It's not like a broken leg, it's not like a broken wrist," Harry continued.

“It's something that we are still relatively unsure of. But guess what? Every single person in this room, the youngest, the oldest, every single person has mental health," he noted. "So therefore, you have to look after yourself to be able to look after other people. And other people have to be able to look after themselves, to look after you. That's the way it works. And there is no shame to be able to acknowledge that today is a bad day, okay?”

During her own speech, Meghan said, “Every single one of you has a story. We all have our story. And there's no shame in any single one of your stories. Even on the hardest days or darkest days, everything is a pillar of your strength by each of you being there.”

The Duchess of Sussex then went on to make a sweet nod to her and Harry’s 2-year-old daughter Princess Lilibet, before speaking about her pride in coming to Nigeria.

"Your teachers see that in you. And we see that in you," Meghan, who recently revealed her Nigerian heritage, added. "Interestingly, so does our daughter, Lili; she's much tinier than you guys, about to turn three. A few weeks ago, she looked at me and saw her reflection in my eyes. She said, 'Mama, I see me in you.' Now, she was talking literally, but I held onto those words in a different way. I thought, yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you. But as I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well."

Meghan added, “It is a complete honor to have our first visit to Nigeria be here with all of you. We believe in you. We believe in your futures. We believe in your ability to continue to tell your stories and to just be honest with each other.”

“There is no need to suffer in silence. Just make sure that you are taking care of yourselves and that begins with your mental health by really talking about whatever's coming up for you,” Meghan said, before adding a happy birthday message to James Holt, who is the director of the couple’s Archewell Foundation.

“So just like that, we celebrate all the good stuff and we are with each other even in the moments that are sad,” she said. 

Meghan and Harry visited the Lightway Academy after touching down in the African country earlier in the day.

The school, which is a co-educational day school, is located in the heart of the country’s capital Abuja. There they were greeted by the CEO of GEANCO, before meeting with the school’s founder Oprah Adi, 75, and Agbese, who is Adi’s daughter. 

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE during the outing on Friday, Agbese said, "Mental health is a very important issue and it’s not talked about enough in Nigeria, so when people that are experts in that regard come here and talk about it — sometimes messages coming from strangers sinks in better with children than those they hear about every day.”

“I believe it’s really something they’ve been looking forward for a long time," she added. "And the Duchess has a bit of Nigerian heritage, so it will be good for her to see some of her roots and imbibe some of the vibrancy that Nigerians have. It’s in the air. It’s contagious.”

The Duchess of Sussex wore a peach-colored maxi dress by Heidi Merrick for the outing, along with Emma Parsons sandals, while Harry dressed in a matching beige shirt and pants.
