Benedict Cumberbatch and Wife Sophie Hunter Step Out After His Opening Night in 'Hamlet'

Throngs of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s most loyal fans waited for up to 20 hours to nab tickets to the premiere of Hamlet, the Shakespeare staple he’s headlining in London.

Of course, Cumberbatch’s most devoted admirer, his wife, Sophie Hunter, had no problem securing a seat. The couple, who welcomed a son in June, were photographed leaving the Barbican theatre – Cumberbatch in a blue button-down shirt and his wife in a playful leopard-print top – after the opening night of the production.

Cumberbatch has received a range of reviews – running the gamut from glowing to glum – for his titular turn as Hamlet. A year ago, the London Evening Standard reported that Benedict’s star power made the production, directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, “the fastest-selling ticket in London theatre history.”

Cumberbatch, who gained a cult following of so-called Cumberbitches for his role in Sherlock and earned an Oscar nomination for The Imitation Game, has been eyeing this part for years. “I hope to return to the theatre soon, hopefully as Hamlet, as it’s a role I’ve been interested in for a long time, he told The Telegraph in 2012. I don’t know if there is such a thing as a right age to play the part, but 36 or 37 seems appropriate to me, so I need to do it before long.”
