Tatum first met Dewan on the set of their 2006 dance hit Step Up — and the couple proved they had all the right moves. Their chemistry was palpable on- and off-screen. A hint? Tatum told PEOPLE in 2006 that he would love to be with "someone who doesn't take herself too seriously and can be a goofball."

September 2008: Channing Tatum proposes to Jenna Dewan

Tatum surprised Dewan with a Hawaiian proposal in front of close friends who secretly traveled to Maui for the couple's big moment. He popped the question with a Neil Lane sparkler.

The newly-engaged pair attempted stand-up paddle boarding while vacationing in Hawaii. "I'm just so freaking happy," the actress told PEOPLE at the time. "It's great."

July 11, 2009: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan get married

The dancing duo tied the knot on July 11, 2009, in Malibu, California, in front of 220 guests. The groom sizzled in a tux, while the bride glowed in a peach-and-ivory Reem Acra couture ball gown.

"I'm as happy as I possibly can be on the planet right now," the 21 Jump Street star told PEOPLE shortly after the wedding.

July 12, 2009: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan honeymoon in Bali

While departing LAX on July 12, 2009, the just-married pair engaged in some airport PDA. Then, it was off to Bali, where the newlyweds celebrated their union by getting matching tattoos. The line for the ink was taken from their vows and translated to "side by side" in Balinese. Tatum was tatted on his rib cage while Dewan opted for her foot.

"It was a joint decision," Tatum told PEOPLE in 2009 at a Los Angeles screening of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. "We always wanted to get a tattoo of something together."

July 27, 2009: Channing Tatum says his relationship with Jenna Dewan is "just about perfect"

Weeks after their wedding, the lovey-dovey pair stylishly posed at the Tokyo premiere of Tatum's 2009's flick G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. "It's pretty much the same as I've felt every day since I met her — and that's just about perfect," the actor told PEOPLE.

2010: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan become dog parents

Tatum and Dewan added rescue dog Lulu (a pit bull Catahoula mix) and Meeka (a miniature Japanese spitz) to their family to make their tribe a party of four. "My dogs LIVE 4 their hikes," Dewan tweeted of her fur babies' favorite pastime.

In 2022, Tatum made his co-directorial debut with the film Dog, loosely inspired by his rescue dog, Lulu, who died in 2018. "Lulu was my little shadow," he told PEOPLE in February 2022. "She was everything. She was my best friend."

May 21, 2012: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan win a Peabody Award

Tatum and Dewan teamed up behind the camera to delve into a subject close to their hearts, serving as executive producers for the 2010 HBO documentary Earth Made of Glass about post-genocide Rwanda.

Later, their work on the documentary earned them a Peabody Award, and the couple attended the ceremony together in New York City on May 21, 2012, to graciously accept.

"It's nice to be recognized for a project that we feel we're really proud of," Dewan told E! News. "I think it has a great message, and it's nice just to get that awareness out."

November 2012: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan joke about his "Sexiest Man Alive" title

Tatum may have been crowned PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive in 2012, but when the Magic Mike star first revealed the news to Dewan, it was anything but a sexy moment.

"I told Jenna after we'd been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they'd gotten skunked," he said.

Dewan added, "Maybe it was the sexy skunk musk that made him think of it."

December 17, 2012: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan are expecting their first child together

Three months after promoting their second on-screen appearance together in the 2011 rom-com 10 Years, the actors announced they were expecting their first child.

"I'm ready; I think she's ready," Tatum told PEOPLE at the time, revealing that he had dreams for a big family — but Dewan wasn't so sure. "It's really easy for us guys to say, 'I want like 15 kids. Jenna will be like, 'Well, you better get another wife!'"

May 31, 2013: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan welcome their first child

Tatum and Dewan welcomed their daughter, Everly, in May 2013.

June 16, 2013: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan share first photo of daughter

The actor shared the first photo of their daughter on his Facebook account while celebrating Father's Day in 2013. The pair was highly protective of their daughter and rarely shared photographs of her face on social media.

"Thank you everyone for all the loving messages! Chan, myself and Everly are happy as can be and appreciate them all," Dewan tweeted days earlier on June 7, 2013.

November 2017: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan are photographed together for last time

The two were last photographed together in Los Angeles at the November 2017 premiere of Tatum's film War Dog: A Soldier's Best Friend, which he also produced. Tatum and Dewan wore matching black attire and smiled while posing on the red carpet. At the event, Tatum shared how he revealed the news to Dewan about his past as a male stripper in Florida and her surprising reaction.

"I think it was one of the very first, like, dinners we ever had together," he told ET. "I don't know. I'm not shy about it. She was just like, 'What?' She needed to know, just like everybody."

March 26, 2018: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan attend Kids' Choice Awards separately

The couple attended the Kids' Choice Awards with their daughter, Everly, where Tatum hit the stage to promote his 2018 animated movie Smallfoot. It was their daughter's first public event. Although they did not pose for pictures together at the awards show, Dewan was photographed walking with Everly in the audience.

April 2, 2018: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan announce their separation

On April 2, 2018, after nearly nine years of marriage, the two announced they were separating in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.

"We have lovingly chosen to separate as a couple," they said in a joint statement. "We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now."

May 29, 2018: Jenna Dewan opens up about co-parenting with Channing Tatum

Nearly two months after announcing their separation, Dewan opened up to Harper's Bazaar in May 2018 about how she and Tatum were approaching co-parenting.

"We're just getting used to it," she said. "We're in a very positive energy together, trying to be the best parents to Everly. We support each other."

Dewan also explained that her daughter, Everly, inspired her to be more assertive about her own path. "If she's not running her own business or ruling the world, I have failed as a mother," she added.

October 26, 2018: Jenna Dewan files for divorce from Channing Tatum

In October 2018, PEOPLE confirmed Dewan filed for divorce six months after her split with Tatum. According to court documents obtained by The Blast, the actress cited irreconcilable differences and asked for joint custody and spousal support. She also requested to revert to her maiden name. Tatum also requested joint custody in his response.

November 20, 2019: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan are declared legally single

While their property assets and child custody agreement were still unsettled, PEOPLE confirmed Tatum and Dewan were declared legally single by a Los Angeles judge in 2019.

The news came two months after Dewan announced she was expecting a child with then-boyfriend Steve Kazee. In February 2020, Kazee proposed to Dewan, and The Rookie star welcomed son Callum in March 2020.

Tatum has been romantically linked to Batman actress Zoë Kravitz since 2021, when Tatum costarred in Kravitz's Pussy Island film.

January 17, 2023: Channing Tatum says his divorce from Jenna Dewan was "terrifying"

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Tatum opened up about his divorce from Dewan.

"In the beginning, it was super scary and terrifying," he said. "Your life turns on its axis. This whole plan that you had literally turns into sand and goes through your fingers."

The Magic Mike star went on to explain that fundamental differences are what drove him and Dewan apart.

"When you're parents, you really understand [the] differences between the two of you," Tatum said. "Because it is screaming at you all day long. How you parent differently, how you look at the world, how you go through the world."

January 17, 2024: Jenna Dewan says co-parenting with Channing Tatum is "always a journey"

During an interview with Romper, Dewan, whom writer Doree Shafrir said was "careful with her words," spoke briefly about co-parenting with Tatum.

"It’s always a journey,” the actress and dancer said. “It never ends. You just learn as you go and get better at certain things, and for me, Evie will always be my top priority. I just continually put her first. That’s how I can manage all hard things.” 

April 10, 2024: Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum want each other to testify in their divorce

In April 2024, court documents obtained by PEOPLE showed that Dewan submitted her "preliminary witness list" as the divorce trial continues. Dewan and Tatum's names were on the list since she wants them both to "testify regarding all issues related to the parties' marriage including business and financial activities."

The list of witnesses that Tatum's attorneys filed included Dewan and her fiancé, Kazee, who was "expected to testify regarding his and Petitioner’s cohabitation, joint expenses and all related matters."
