The 40-year-old Oscar winner’s anticipated follow-up to Get Out (2017) centers around a family whose serene vacation turns into a horrifying gamble of life and death when they’re terrorized by a group of their doppelgängers. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss, Winston Duke, Anna Diop, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Us caused visceral reactions from those lucky enough to see it before it opens March 22, with many saying the film is “anxiety-inducing” and that Oscar winner Nyong’o gives another “award-worthy” performance. In a January 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Peele said the movie wasn’t a film about race. “I realized I had never seen a horror movie of this kind, where there’s an African-American family at the center that just is,” he said. “After you get over the initial realization that you’re watching a black family in a horror film, you’re just watching a movie. You’re just watching people.” He added, “I feel like it proves a very valid and different point than Get Out, which is, not everything is about race. Get Out proved that everything is about race. I’ve proved both points!” Us is in theaters March 22.
