For all his brilliance, Stephen Hawking has famously admitted: “I’m no better than anyone else at understanding what makes people tick, particularly women.”

In this exclusive clip from the film The Theory of Everything, which portrays Hawking’s relationship with his first wife, Jane, it’s evident that women are a mystery to the budding scientist.

“You’ve leaped to a that’s a false conclusion,” Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne, stammers in response to Jane’s (Felicity Jones) admission that she loves him.

But a sweet kiss brings him around in the end, as Jane cleans his glasses and symbolically gives him a new view of the world.

Watch the scene below from the film, which just won the “Audience Favorite World Cinema” award at the Mill Valley Film Festival and hits theaters Nov. 7.
