Ellen DeGeneres Is Taking Complete Credit for Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez's Engagement

Ellen DeGeneres has long been pushing for a J. Lo and A-Rod engagement

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have Ellen DeGeneres to thank for their engagement — according to the comedian, at least.

On Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the host, 61, happily pointed out that she’s the one who gave Rodriguez “the push that he needed” to pop the question — which he did on Saturday with an enormous emerald-cut “rare” engagement ring leading diamond experts say could be worth up to $5 million.

“I don’t want to take credit for this, but …” DeGeneres joked in her opening monologue, adding, “Yeah, I kinda … I did that. … I’m pretty sure I’m the reason.”

As proof, DeGeneres pointed to Lopez’s last appearance on her syndicated talk show back in February, in which she played her part in helping to speed up the process by giving Lopez a giant clock with the couple’s faces on it.

“Because you and A-Rod just celebrated your two-year anniversary … This is a clock, and it’s basically to remind him that time is ticking and he should hurry up and propose,” DeGeneres said. “Or you should propose.”

Even before that, DeGeneres had been pushing for a Lopez and Rodriguez engagement. In November 2018, she told the Second Act actress that Rodriguez had texted he was getting ready to propose.

“You should [get married], because y’all seem very happy,” DeGeneres said. “I mean, it would be good to do for Christmas.”

Perhaps that’s why Lopez tagged DeGeneres on her Instagram post announcing the engagement on Saturday. “When she announced it, she posted that picture and she actually tagged me in that photo,” DeGeneres remarked. “So I wrote back, ‘Yes, I’ll be your Maid of Honor.’ ”

Also during her monologue, DeGeneres made more jokes about the couple’s engagement, starting with the mega-carat ring.

“That ring is so heavy, he has to hold her hand up,” she said, pointing to the picture the couple posted. “It looks like it, it’s gigantic. She’s got to be really, really careful when she’s washing dishes with that!”

And while DeGeneres didn’t have any insight as to when Lopez and Rodriguez would be walking down the aisle, she did seem to have some details as to what the big day would entail.

“[Jennifer’s] already started choreographing her first dance. There’s going to be three costume changes, backup dancers, the whole thing,” DeGeneres laughed. “Front row tickets are already $800 on StubHub!”

Her bit ended on a [mostly] sincerely note. “J. Lo I’m very very happy for you, not just because you took my advice, but because you seem really happy together,” DeGeneres said. “If two extremely filthy rich people can find love, there’s hope for all of us.”

Lopez, 49, and Rodriguez, 43, have been dating since February 2017.

A source told PEOPLE Rodriguez popped the question during a romantic getaway in the Bahamas, another adding that the retired athlete planned the entire proposal by himself.

“He did everything on his own with the ring. It was a complete surprise [to Jen],” a source said of the sparkler A-Rod gave to Lopez.

Sources also told PEOPLE that Lopez has been overwhelmed with joy since Rodriguez popped the question.

“Jennifer is ecstatic and so are their families and friends. Very few people knew Alex planned on proposing. It was very much a surprise for Jennifer,” one insider said. “It was just how Alex wanted it.”

Though they haven’t started planning their nuptials just yet, one thing is certain. All of the couple’s children will “definitely” play a huge role in their upcoming wedding.

Lopez and ex-husband Marc Anthony, 50, have 11-year-old twins Maximilian “Max” David and Emme Maribel, while Rodriguez and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis, 46, share daughters Ella, 10, and Natasha, 14.

“For them both, they are still all about their family with the four kids. Their initial strong attraction for each other would have quickly faded if they had not been able to come together as a family,” a source told PEOPLE.

“Their kids all accepted each other and got along from the beginning. It’s always tricky when you merge families, but Jennifer and Alex did a great job from the start. The kids are amazing together. And they have wanted Jennifer and Alex to get married for a long time. They will all definitely be a huge part of the wedding,” the source added.
