Going for Gold: John Legend Is Now Getting Swim Lessons from Olympian Ryan Lochte

Lochte says he's getting Legend "ready for 2020 Olympics"

Watch out 2020 Olympics, a Legend is on his way.

R&B singer John Legend, 40, just recruited one of the best to help teach him how to swim: 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte. On Monday, Lochte joined Legend in his backyard pool to give the singer a swim lesson.

“Not a bad way to start my week. Swimming with [John Legend] giving him some swim tips and getting him ready for 2020 Olympics haha!” Lochte , 34, captioned a photo and video he shared from the lesson.

The “All of Me” singer first started learning how to swim in January, after revealing in a tweet that he was taking lessons for the first time since he was 5 years old. Legend joked that despite the late start, he was ahead of his father, Ronald Stephens, who didn’t learn how to swim until he was in his 60s. Just last month, Legend opened up to PEOPLE about how the lessons were going, and his newfound confidence in the water.

“I was never afraid to go in the pool, but I was afraid to go in the deep end,” he told PEOPLE. “I’m happy that I’m able to live with less fear and be able to swim with my kids. It just opens up a lot more opportunities. I just want to be comfortable in any water settings. So if we’re out on a boat on the ocean, if we’re in a pool, no matter where we are.”

His kids — who he shares with wife Chrissy Teigan — Luna Simone, 2 and Miles Theodore, almost 11 months, were a huge motivating factor for Legend when deciding to dive into swim lessons.

“She’s [Luna] the one who got me excited about doing it, because we started giving her lessons,” he said. “Even Miles is taking lessons now. He started lessons before me.”
