Whitney Port Bursts Into Tears as She Reveals She Was 'Mom Bullied' at a Baby Event

Whitney Port opened up about the recent encounter in an emotional video shared to her YouTube page on Thursday

Whitney Port has never shied away from being candid about motherhood, so her most recent experience at a mothers event was no exception.

As part of her YouTube video series titled “I Love My Baby But…”, the former Hills star, 34, got emotional while opening up about an encounter from earlier this week where she said she was “mom bullied.”

Port, who shares 20-month-old son Sonny Sanford with husband Tim Rosenman, revealed in her latest video on Thursday that she attended a panel discussion for moms this past Monday, but left feeling hurt and upset after the other mothers made her feel unwelcomed.

“I went in with a good attitude, I walked out feeling a little bit insecure,” she explained. “There were a lot of moms that I knew. I approached two specifically… and I got the same reaction from both of them which was, ‘I really cannot be bothered talking to you right now’ and they were trying to back out of the conversation as quickly as they could.”

Port described the bullying as a “passive-aggressive” type instead of being “in my face, calling me names or stealing my lunch money.”

She also claimed that the other mothers were doing “the least amount possible to get by” without making Port intentionally feel like they wanted “nothing to do with her” — but the reality star argued, “I can see right through that.”

“It’s especially hard when you’re a new mother and you really want to put yourself out there because this is the time to make lifelong relationships,” she said, noting that she questioned whether she was just being “overly sensitive” about the encounter.

Port believed that time on The Hills may have also negatively impacted the way the other mothers viewed her and explained that people often associate with others who will “make them cool.”

“If I’m not cool enough for them because I was on a reality TV show, then they’re not gonna try to be friends with me,” she said. “It hurts to feel like someone doesn’t want to hang out with you, or have a conversation with you and try to get to know you. I take it personally.”

At one point in the clip, Rosenman, who was behind the camera, asked Port what she would tell the mothers now if they were watching her video. After a brief pause, Port tearfully admitted, “That you hurt my feelings.”

“It’s so silly because it’s so easy to be nice to people,” she added. “They probably never even thought about [being mean.]”

By the end of the video, Port came to terms with the fact that there are moments where she believes she bullies herself into thinking people don’t want to be friends with her because she considers herself to be “awkward and quiet” at times.

“I need to stop telling myself this narrative,” she explained. “The problem is I’m bullying myself… I think I’m worthy of people of being nice to me but I can be quiet and awkward.”

“I can’t control the way anybody acts but it shouldn’t stop me from putting myself out there,” she added. “I just have to work on my own self-esteem and focus on the positive qualities about me as opposed to the negative.”

Since welcoming Sonny in July 2017, Port has remained candid about the ups and downs of parenthood.

In September, the star, who recently signed on to MTV series’ reboot The Hills: New Beginnings, admitted to feeling a bit guilty for making parenthood “out to be the scariest, most brutal thing of all time.”

“But then you get through it,” she noted. “I just said to Timmy the other day, ‘I think we need to turn a new leaf on the series and yes, still discuss the hard things that are happening because they will happen, but we need to start talking about the positive, great things that are starting to happen as well.’ “

“Because as he turned 1, there was a huge shift in how I viewed motherhood and just my overall happiness as a mom and I think that’s important to share,” continued Port. “Yes, the first year was really hard and I want to be realistic with everybody about that, but it doesn’t last. It’s not going to be like that forever and I think that’s an important message to send.”

When The Hills returns to MTV, Port said she intends on having her son appear on the show, which will reunite original cast members, alongside their children, friends and returning favorites.

“Being a mom is a huge part of my identity now, so it would feel weird if he was never on it and I just talked about him,” she revealed. “So I feel like Sonny will be on it a bit here and there.”

As for Sonny’s dad? He’s “TBD,” said the star. “He doesn’t really want to do it; he’s in TV, he works behind the camera, so it’s not really natural for him to be on it,” Port explained. “But also, he is my husband and the show is based on our real lives, so it would be weird if it were just me and nobody else. I think he’ll pop up here and there.”
