Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift Were 'Completely Normal' at Dinner 2 Days Before Custody Lawsuit: Source (Exclusive)

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner during their recent New York City hang.

After the pair went to dinner at Via Carota in Manhattan on Tuesday, a lawsuit filed in a Manhattan court on Thursday and obtained by PEOPLE reveals the Game of Thrones alum, 27, has requested her two daughters with estranged husband Joe Jonas, 34, be returned to England amid their recent split.

"They were normal. Completely normal," a source tells PEOPLE of Swift, 33, and Turner's dinner outing. "Everyone was all excited, but they were normal."

Following their meal at Via Carota, Swift and Turner went to Temple Bar on Lafayette Street. "Sophie seemed to be enjoying the night," an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

"Taylor is a great friend — Sophie can talk to her about anything," a second source tells PEOPLE. "It cheered Sophie up to spend time with Taylor.”

Turner's newly filed lawsuit — concerning children Willa, 3, and a 14-month-old baby girl, identified in court docs as D. — calls for "the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained," with her legal team asserting the "wrongful retention" began on Sept. 20.

Turner claims that she and the musician agreed to declare England their "forever home" in conversations that took place over Christmas 2022 as they prepped for the year ahead.

The pair was in the process of purchasing an English countryside residence in April when they sold the Miami house they'd been living in, the documents allege. At that point, Turner began filming on the Joan mini-series she has worked on this summer.

Once Jonas embarked on a Jonas Brothers tour, the documents claim the two agreed to let their kids join him because he had more time during the day to be available to them than Turner did amid filming, noting she had "hesitation" about the "temporary arrangement."

Turner alleges that the breakdown of their marriage happened "very suddenly" after an argument on Aug. 15. Jonas filed for divorce on Sept. 5 and the Dark Phoenix actress claims she learned about their split "from the media" days later.

A rep for Jonas shared a statement obtained by PEOPLE that denies this was the case.

“After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case," the statement read. "Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce."

The issue of custody came to a head when the two recently met up to discuss next steps, Turner's petition claims, at which point she "reiterated" the plan to move to England and says she was met with pushback from Jonas.

His rep expanded on this in the statement provided to PEOPLE, which reads, "The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago."

Following the estranged couple's meeting this past Sunday, "Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK. Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately."

“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending," the statement from Jonas' rep adds.

Jonas and Turner married in 2019 after dating for three years. At the time of their split, each posted a joint statement to their social media accounts regarding the end of their four-year marriage.

“Statement from the two of us: 'After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,'” they both shared on Instagram.

“There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,'" the statement concluded.
