Amal Alamuddin Wedding Dress from Marriage to George Clooney

When you’re a tall, gorgeous and internationally known human rights lawyer who’s going to marry one of the biggest movie stars in the world, you’re likely to have your pick of any top designer for the big day. So the only thing we knew for certain about Amal Alamuddin’s wedding gown was that it was sure to be classy, sophisticated and stunning (like the bride herself). And in our look at Alamuddin’s Oscar de la Renta gown in this week’s PEOPLE, we can confirm it’s all that and more.

Alamuddin, 36, was radiant in her very traditional French lace gown, which was hand-embroidered with pearls and diamanté stones. The gown featured an off-the-shoulder neckline and a full train, and the whole look was finished with a cathedral-length lace-edged veil.

The designer, who has created wedding gowns for celebrities including Kate Bosworth and Jenna Bush, personally attended each fitting. “He’s such an elegant designer and such an elegant man,” Alamuddin tells PEOPLE of de la Renta.

“It was simple and grand,” a source tells PEOPLE of the dress. “It had all the hallmarks of a grand de la Renta style.”

Aside from her new platinum wedding band, Alamuddin’s wedding jewelry consisted of natural pearl earrings with square-cut diamond accents, a gift from her parents, Baria and Ramzi Alamuddin. The pearls were harvested from the waters of Bahrain and made by a Lebanese jeweler, Chatila — all details that might hold special significance to the Beirut-born beauty.

It wasn’t the only gorgeous designer dress Alamuddin wore over the weekend. She attended pre-wedding festivities in custom Alexander McQueen, then appeared for a post-wedding event in Giambattista Valli couture. But we’d expect nothing else from the lawyer, whose distinctive style (and amazing hair) we’ve admired since Clooney proposed.

For his part, the groom stuck to a classic Armani tux (his longtime style staple), a well-groomed mane and his newest accessory: a platinum wedding band.
