Met Gala 2014: Our Favorite Dresses of the Night!

Monday’s Met Gala had plenty of gowns — some great, some good and some flat-out questionable. But though there were dozens of looks to choose from, we couldn’t help but play favorites. Alex Apatoff, Style News Editor: Once I learned more about Charles James, I was so excited for a parade of old-fashioned ballgowns à la White Christmas and all my other favorite old movies. So I was more than a little disappointed to see stars in pants, day dresses and more. For me, the best part of a theme party is actually having fun with the theme, which is why Emmy Rossum easily walked away with my “Best Dressed” title in this lovely floral Carolina Herrera gown. Sure, perhaps it’s a little “much” for an average red carpet event, which is why it’s so perfect for the Met Gala. I wish every star had enjoyed getting dressed up as much as Emmy did!

Zoë Ruderman, Deputy Style and Beauty Director: The second I saw this metallic Michael Kors on the red carpet, I yelled “Mine!” into the PEOPLE news room, much like kids yell “Shotgun!” when they get close to a car. I didn’t want any of the other style editors to claim this look as their personal best dressed. But also, I think what I really meant was, “I want that dress to be mine” as in hanging in my closet. The silhouette of her strapless gown is just perfect: the ruching, the sweetheart neckline, the draping at the hip. And I love the color, halfway between silver and gunmetal, which makes the whole look feel vaguely reminiscent of last year’s punk theme, especially when paired with that choker. I wrote in the Best Dressed gallery that I want her to send her dress to our offices at the end of the night (you know she’ll never wear it again) and Lily, I mean it. Brittany Talarico, Associate Style Editor: True story: As soon as I saw Blake Lively hit the red carpet, I texted my fiancé a picture of the star, with the message, “I want to be Blake Lively.” Then I went on about how much I loved Ryan Reynolds’s custom Gucci tux. See, this is what I imagine we’ll look like on our wedding day. (Okay, I won’t be wearing a gown with a cape-slash-train and he won’t be in velvet, but you know what I mean.)

Blake was the epitome of red carpet glamour in her blush embellished Gucci Première gown complete with a train (which she quipped was a monster on all those Met Steps). Plus, her her deep side-swept waves and pink pout (courtesy of NARS lip liner in “Salsa”) was my favorite beauty moment of the night.

Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director: You know it’s a weird night for fashion when Kendall Jenner is one of our best dressed stars and Lupita Nyong’o is not. As soon as Kendall posted this photo on her Instagram I was like, “Maybe it’s time to stop calling her a reality star.” She’s a model, guys. Not convinced? Who else but a model could take a pretty, but simple, Topshop gown (that’s right, it’s not even by a major designer) and make it look so incredibly stunning and dramatic? Plus, she nailed the styling, working full blown-back hair and a diamond Chopard necklace. Somewhere Kim Kardashian is crying into her Lanvin.
