Freddy, My Love? The 'Grease: Live' Songs You May Not Recognize

Songs from the Broadway musical, rock 'n' roll classics and a new tune were added to the songs known from the 1978 film

Fans of the 1978 film version of Grease will be for a nice surprise when Fox’s live telecast of the hit musical airs Sunday night – there are even more songs to love!

“Grease is a show that everyone knows,” Fox’s Danny Zuko (Broadway star Aaron Tveit) tells PEOPLE. “We are doing our best to pay homage to the versions that people know, but we are also making it our own and creating something completely new.”

Grease: Live will combine elements from the film and the original 1973 Broadway production as well as completely new scenes and songs written for the live telecast.

Here are five songs that will be new to some viewers:

“Freddy, My Love”

“I think people are going to be surprised by ‘Freddy, My Love’ because it’s in the [stage] musical but it’s not in the movie,” says Sunday’s Pink Lady Marty ( Keke Palmer). “The way we are introducing it is really fun. We weren’t sure we were going to be able to pull it off logistically but it looks like it’s going to all work out and be amazing.”

“Those Magic Changes”

This is another song from the Broadway musical that has been added to Fox’s live telecast. As in the stage production, the song will be performed Sunday by the T-Bird Doody ( Liv and Maddie‘s Jordan Fisher).

“It’s Raining on Prom Night”

In the original stage production, Sandy doesn’t get to enjoy the hand jive at the school dance like Olivia Newton-John did with John Travolta in the classic film. Instead, the new girl in town is left wallowing about the weather (and her tears). That’s where this tune comes in.

Fun fact: Fans of the film have actually heard “Freddy, My Love,” “Those Magic Changes,” and “It’s Raining on Prom Night.” All three songs play in the background on the jukebox during scenes in the diner.

“All I Need Is An Angel”

This is the one new track that was written specially for Sunday’s telecast.

“We are very excited,” executive producer Marc Platt has said of this new tune which was written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) for the character of Frenchy (“Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen).

“Cake By The Ocean”

Joe Jonas and his band DNCE will be taking the stage at Rydell High’s school dance as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers (portrayed by the group Sha Na Na in the 1978 film).

In addition to “Born To Hand Jive” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Is Here to Stay” – which Sha Na Na performed in the film – DNCE will play a rendition of Buddy Holly and the Crickets’ “Maybe (Baby)” and their current radio hit “Cake By the Ocean.”

Grease: Live will air Sunday at 7 p.m. (ET) on Fox.
