CBS’ Mom took a dark turn in Thursday’s episode – and Twitter users didn’t hold back with how they felt.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Thursday’s Mom.

Though there was a wedding in this week’s hour, the happy occasion was overshadowed at the end of the episode when Christy (Anna Faris) and the rest of the gang learned that Jodi (Emily Osment) had passed away from a drug overdose.

Jodi had been something of like a daughter to Christy, who also worked as her AA sponsor, making the death all the more tragic.

On Twitter, a number of fans expressed their sorrow over the twist, but also praising the show for the bold move.

Some noted that the plot unfortunately is something that happens in real life.

Others praised series co-creator Chuck Lorre for the episode.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lorre explained that the Mom team chose a heartbreaking end for Jodi because addiction “is a life and death issue.”

“Even though we’re doing a comedy and our first issue is to somehow cause laughter, from the very beginning we’ve tried to make this show about recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction and to do that without ever acknowledging the harsh reality of it seemed to be a cheat,” said Lorre.

Mom airs Thursdays (9 p.m. ET) on CBS.
