Candice Bergen as Murphy Brown

Already a successful movie actress and model, Candice Bergen took on the role of FYI TV news reporter Murphy Brown in 1988.

Once the series ended, the five-time Emmy winner hosted Exhale with Candice Bergen on the Oxygen network and picked up roles in Miss Congeniality (2000) and on Boston Legal, among others. The actress has been married to her second husband, Marshall Rose, since 2000, and has a daughter named Chloe from her first marriage to Louis Malle.

Brown came back for the 2018 revival of the series, along with a handful of her original castmates; however, the show was canceled after one season. She went on to costar in 2018's Book Club alongside Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton and Mary Steenburgen — who all reprise their roles for the May 2023 sequelbecame a grandmother in 2020 and started the luxury merchandise line BergenBags.

Faith Ford as Corky Sherwood

Faith Ford, a.k.a. Corky Sherwood, found fame on soap operas before joining Murphy Brown for its entire run, including the revival season.

She later went on to costar with Kelly Ripa on the ABC sitcom Hope & Faith before scoring roles on the TV series Carpoolers and in films like The Pacifier (2005), Prom (2011) and We Have a Ghost (2023). Ford has been married to her second husband, Campion Murphy, since 1998.

Jay Thomas as Jerry Gold

Though he only appeared in a handful of episodes, Jay Thomas — also known for Cheers and Mork & Mindy — left an impression as talk show host, and Murphy Brown's love interest, Jerry Gold.

He stayed quite busy after his time on the series ended, appearing on Ray Donovan and hosting an eponymous show on SiriusXM. He died in August 2017 at the age of 69 after battling cancer; he is survived by his wife and three sons.

Charles Kimbrough as Jim Dial

Charles Kimbrough already had a Tony nomination under his belt for best featured actor in a musical for the original Broadway production of Company when he joined the Murphy Brown cast as esteemed reporter Jim Dial.

He appeared in a handful of movies and TV episodes after the series ended its run, and made several returns to the stage since, too, including the 2012 Broadway revival of Harvey. The actor was twice married to actresses Mary Jane Wilson and Beth Howland before he died at age 86 in February 2023.

Joe Regalbuto as Frank Fontana

Joe Regalbuto had been acting for a decade when he was cast as FYI reporter Frank Fontana.

He went on to direct a handful of Murphy Brown episodes before appearing on series like Ally McBeal, Side Order of Life and Castle and directing dozens more TV shows, including George Lopez, Hot in Cleveland and an episode during Murphy Brown's 2018 revival season (which he also costarred in). The actor is married with three children.

Grant Shaud as Miles Silverberg

As executive producer Miles Silverberg, Grant Shaud was on Murphy Brown for eight of its original 10 seasons and also came back for the revival season. The actor went on to earn credits including the TV shows Madigan Men, Oliver Beene, Younger and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Pat Corley as Phil

Pat Corley played the beloved owner of Phil's bar, where the FYI crew spent their off hours. He'd been on everything from Roots and Hill Street Blues to Magnum, P.I. and Starsky & Hutch before joining Murphy Brown, and remained mostly out of the spotlight in the years after. His final on-screen performance was as Papa in Ashley Judd's 2006 southern rom-dram, Come Early Morning.

The twice-married actor and father of five died in 2006 at the age of 76.

Robert Pastorelli as Eldin Bernecky

Robert Pastorelli racked up dozens of acting credits before being cast on Murphy Brown as Brown's philosophical house painter, Eldin Bernecky.

During his run on the show, he appeared in the 1996 films Michael and Eraser, and made a return to theater, where he'd first started out, post-Murphy Brown. The father of two died of a drug overdose in 2004 at the age of 49.

Lily Tomlin as Kay Carter-Shepley

Lily Tomlin joined the show in its final years of the original run as producer Kay Carter-Shepley, though she did not reprise her role in the revival season.

Already famous for myriad roles, she moved on to The West Wing, Desperate Housewives and the Netflix series Grace and Frankie with Jane Fonda, as well as the films Moving On (2022) and 80 For Brady (2023). The veteran actress has been with wife Jane Wagner since 1971.
