'Oprah: Where Are They Now' : How Jeremiah Brent Helped Husband Nate Berkus Move Forward from the Death of His Partner

For Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, acknowledging and honoring Berkus’ past is an essential part of their relationship.

In an appearance on Oprah: Where Are They Now? with his husband, Berkus, 44, opens up to Oprah Winfrey about how Brent helped him move on after the death of his partner Fernando Bengoechea, who died in the 2004 tsunami while the two were vacationing in Sri Lanka.

“I didn’t know how to articulate how to keep that and honor that [love] but still move forward without any guilt or fear around that,” the former Nate Berkus Show host tells Winfrey, a longtime friend, in an exclusive clip from Oprah: Where Are They Now?. “You [Brent] were the first person to come into my life and not be threatened or afraid to poke the damage and say, ‘That happened. Let’s talk about it. Let’s figure it out and how it can be part of our world in a way that’s healthy.'”

The two interior designers, who tied the knot in 2014, welcomed their daughter Poppy Brent-Berkus, now 11 months, in March.

Brent, Berkus and Winfrey, who attended the wedding, start getting misty-eyed as they discuss the couple’s nuptials. Winfrey is particularly moved by Brent’s vow to “honor every part of [Berkus’] past.”

“As a part of our love story, there’s no two ways about it,” says the Home Made Simple host, 31. “I oddly feel connected to [Fernando], and I honor that story.

Brent adds, “Our daughter will know who he was,” which make sense given that a photo of Joshua Tree National Park taken by Bengoechea hangs in Poppy’s playroom, which is at the center of their Greenwich Village apartment.

Berkus will be a special guest on Brent’s Home Made Simple Saturday at 9 a.m. ET before the couple appears on Oprah: Where Are They Now? at 10 p.m. ET, both on OWN.
