It’s been a difficult road to recovery for Tracy Morgan. Now, nearly a year after his terrifying accident, the actor reveals he’s determined to walk his fiancée, Megan Wollover, down the aisle.

“I don’t want to walk my wife down the aisle with a cane or in a wheelchair,” Morgan, 46, tells PEOPLE. “So I had to go hard with the therapy.”

“I had to get better,” he continues. “There was no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

When it comes to his ongoing journey to heal, Morgan says that learning how to sit down, stand up and walk again has been the most physically challenging obstacle, but his wedding has served as a big motivator.

“I am working out now, but physical therapy isn’t easy,” he says. “It’s a lot of ooch-ing and lot of ouching and screaming, but I am determined.”

Morgan and Wollover, 28, have a 23-month-old daughter, Maven, in addition to the actor’s three older children. After his release from the hospital, Morgan says, he wanted to marry Wollover right away, but “everything in time.”

Now, with their August nuptials just months away, he can’t wait to say “I do.”

“Happiness is simply having something to look forward to,” he says. “I look forward to being married, and I’m really happy.”
