United Passenger Bites Flight Attendant During 'Aggressive and Disruptive' Meltdown

The Orlando Police Department told PEOPLE that the passenger was "transported to [an] area hospital for evaluation"

A United Airlines flight headed from Miami to Newark, N.J. this week diverted to Orlando, Fla. after a passenger was captured on video biting a flight attendant and becoming what the airline called "aggressive and disruptive."

In footage originally shared by TMZ, a woman on United Flight 762 could be seen with her hands tied behind her back in the plane's aisle as she yelled at flight attendants and fellow passengers. While the airline employees tried to restrain her, the woman appeared to bite an attendant's shoulder before apparently spitting on another person.

Citing an eyewitness, TMZ also reported that the woman threw punches during the ordeal.

"People are recording me," she said at one point in the video, which was also shared by Good Morning America, before alleging an "attitude problem" with United employees, threatening to kill someone and calling a passenger an "old lady" before telling her to "go back to Russia."

The video ended with passengers applauding as police removed the woman from the flight, which TMZ reported was ultimately delayed three-and-a-half hours.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Friday, July 12, United Airlines confirmed that the flight from Miami to Newark on Tuesday, July 11 had stopped in Orlando after the passenger "became aggressive and disruptive."

They added, "We’re grateful to our team for their professionalism and for looking out for the safety of our customers and their fellow United employees."

Per FlightAware, the plane left Miami International Airport at 5:38 p.m. and was in the air for roughly an hour and a half before being diverted to Orlando.

A man who identified himself as a fellow passenger told the Daily Mail that the altercation began when the woman "apparently verbally and then physically attacked a family in the back of the plane after not being able to go to the bathroom at one moment."
