Joseph Gordon-Levitt has found work-life balance, thanks in part to his wife, Tasha McCauley.

Gordon-Levitt began his acting career at 6 years old, starring in several films and on the award-winning series 3rd Rock from the Sun. In his teenage years, he played the beloved role of Cameron James in the rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You.

Though the actor took a temporary break from acting to attend Columbia University in New York City, he dropped out in 2004 to return to his craft and went on to appear in movies such as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and Don Jon.

While Gordon-Levitt's illustrious career has put him in the limelight, he keeps his relationship with McCauley, whom he married in 2014, private.

So who is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's wife? Here's everything to know about Tasha McCauley and her relationship with the actor.

Over the years, Gordon-Levitt has shared little about his romance with McCauley.

However, during a 2013 interview on The Howard Stern Show, Gordon-Levitt mentioned that he had been dating someone outside of Hollywood, explaining that he and McCauley were introduced by mutual friends.

"I have a girlfriend but I tend not to really like to talk about it in public," he said, not revealing her by name. "The girl that I'm with, she really doesn't want to be a part of that."

About one year after the (500) Days of Summer star admitted he was in a relationship, the couple made it official, and tied the knot.

Though neither party shared photos or details about the wedding, PEOPLE exclusively confirmed they held their nuptials on Dec. 20, 2014, during an intimate ceremony at their Los Angeles home.

Since getting married, the pair have expanded their family by two: Gordon-Levitt and McCauley quietly welcomed their first son in August 2015, and their second son was born in June 2017.

The couple have not released their children's names or photos and it's by design. During a 2015 interview on Live with Kelly and Michael, Gordon-Levitt explained that when his kids are of age, he wants them to decide whether they want to be in the spotlight — the same way he was able to choose.

"My son ... he hasn't made the choice to be in the public eye, and that's a choice that I would like him to be able to make when he's older, when he can think about these kinds of things and make that decision for himself," Gordon-Levitt said. "So, for now, I'm just a protective dad, and I want to protect his privacy."

Still, he's shared glimpses of their home life. "I dance every day with my kids," he told PEOPLE in 2020. "Right now, they're really into Gene Kelly and Gregory Hines, two of the all-time greats."

Gordon-Levitt continued, ”What's fantastic is my boys can't tell how mediocre a dancer I really am. They think I'm just another one of those legends. Soon enough, they'll learn the truth, but for now, it's pure glory."

According to her now-deleted LinkedIn, McCauley got her bachelor's degree at Bard College in 2004 and picked up a graduate certificate in robotics from Singularity University, where she became a teaching fellow in robotics and AI.

She then earned her master's at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business in 2014, per CBS News.

McCauley has spent the majority of her career working in the technology space. According to The San Francisco Standard, she cofounded the robotics company Fellow Robots, located in Silicon Valley, while studying at Singularity University.

She went on to be the CEO of "geospatial technology company" GeoSim Systems and the director at the Ten to the Ninth Plus Foundation. In addition, she sat on the board for OpenAI and was part of the advisory board of the British research organization Centre for the Governance of AI.

Now, McCauley is an adjunct senior management scientist at the think tank the RAND Corporation and is on the British board of Effective Ventures, per The New York Times.

She took a zero-gravity flight with Stephen Hawking

In a since-deleted Facebook post originally shared in April 2007 and reposted on X (formerly Twitter) in 2018, McCauley recounted her experience taking a zero-gravity flight with Stephen Hawking at the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in Florida.

In the lengthy post following his death at age 76, McCauley described the experience as "amazing" and an "ecstatic adventure," adding that she was "blown away by how expressive and energetic Professor Hawking" was.

She maintains a private life

Gordon-Levitt has spoken in interviews about his wife's preference to be out of the spotlight, especially when it comes to her personal life.

"We kept our wedding a secret," he said in a 2015 interview with Playboy (via HelloGiggles). "It wasn't that difficult because we didn't tell many people about it. As much as some people may disagree, I don't believe a person's private life — even a person in entertainment — is a public performance."

Despite her preference for privacy, Gordon-Levitt and McCauley made a rare public appearance together in October 2016 at Seth Rogen's Hilarity for Charity Variety Show at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.

Held a couple weeks before Halloween, the couple donned bloodied costumes for an onstage duet and shared a sweet kiss afterward.

Gordon-Levitt likes talking about McCauley on special occasions

While Gordon-Levitt is active on his own Instagram, he tends to share photos of himself and his work rather than his family. When McCauley still had an account on X, she sporadically posted but kept her feed dedicated to work.

During this time, she subtly supported a handful of her husband's projects over the years: She shared promos for his 2016 movie Snowden and the Apple TV+ series Mr. Corman, as well as liked posts about his 2021 Showtime series, Super Pumped.

Throughout their decade-long union, Gordon-Levitt has also given her sweet shout-outs, including during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in June 2024. The actor explained that it was McCauley's birthday and he didn't get to spend it with her because of his work, so he wanted to give "her a special birthday present on the show."

With that, host Jimmy Fallon handed Gordon-Levitt a guitar, and he performed Taylor Swift's 2019 hit "Lover."

"This is a song by a singer-songwriter that she really loves. You all might know [it]," he said. "I just want to say, babe — you're the most luminous soul I've ever met, and I'm so grateful you were born. I'm coming home soon. Love you."
