Why enticing opportunities remain for private equity firms investing in Africa
Initiative for Global Development - IGD Blog

More specifically, over the last decade, private capital—inclusive of private equity, venture capital, private credit and private infrastructure funds—has played a growing role in addressing the financing gap facing business owners and project developers across the continent. Africa’s untapped opportunities represent the perfect challenge for private equity firms, who can bring in capital, operational expertise and international connections, while generating globally competitive returns for the institutions who back their funds.

Private Equity and Health Care in Emerging Markets
EMPEA
In many ways, health care exemplifies EMPEA’s belief that emerging markets (EM) private equity provides investors the opportunity for outsized returns, as well as positive social impact. Demand for health care products and services has grown faster than overall EM economic activity, and the needs of consumers have outstripped the capacity of public sector options. Many governments, faced with
budgetary pressures and preoccupied with ensuring macroeconomic stability in a volatile global landscape, have recognized the need for increased private investment in the sector. It’s therefore no surprise that health care private equity investment activity in emerging markets has reached the highest levels ever recorded by EMPEA. Yet delivering on the promise of health care in emerging
markets requires not just an opportunistic mindset, but patience, creativity and operational insight into what is ultimately a very complex sector.
However strong the macroeconomic drivers may be, the “micro” attributes of investments in health care are crucial to success. This report explores the health care private equity landscape in emerging markets, with a view to how fund managers are approaching investments across countries, subsectors and investment stages. Most importantly, the report examines how fund managers are driving change at the portfolio company level, creating value not only for investors, but also for the communities that health care companies ultimately serve.Other authorsSee publication -

The power sector in emerging markets (EM) is increasingly on the radar screens of international investors. Demand for electricity in developing economies is high and will only grow, requiring substantial additional investment in both the modernization of outdated power infrastructure and in building new capacity in order to meet the needs of consumers and businesses. As this report uncovers, electricity supply and demand dynamics in emerging markets—coupled with regulatory environments that have evolved towards increased private participation in the power sector—underpin an opportunity for private investment fund managers (GPs) and their limited partners (LPs) to not only earn compelling returns, but also drive further economic growth and welfare gains by increasing access to reliable and affordable power.

Our programs, including our several global humanitarian concerts held at Carnegie Hall in New York with distinguished musicians from many of the most renowned ensembles in the world, offer an exciting and innovative space for the global humanitarian, business, media and artistic communities to come together and engage the most pressing civic issues of our time at the local, national, and global levels, through the impact of music-making.
Our most recent undertaking is Ubuntu-Shruti, our new professional training orchestra. The name combines African and Sanskrit concepts, meaning “com- munity revealed through sound.” Grounded in the empowering principles of chamber music, the orchestra is comprised of the finest young musicians beginning their professional musical careers in New York City. They are guided by distinguished mentors from some of the world’s top orchestras. The Orchestra’s musical programming focuses on immigrant communities and social justice in general.
